Prison Officer – HMP Norwich

Location: HMP Norwich, Knox Rd, Norwich, NR1 4LU | Starting Salary: £36,816 (39-hour week inc. 20% unsocial hours)

There is no typical Prison Officer. You will need to work varied shifts (including weekends) and fully commit to supporting colleagues as part of a unified team to ensure safety for both staff and prisoners.


Key Responsibilities

  • Everyday Roles:

    • Balance discipline and rehabilitation—acting as a peacekeeper, counsellor, and mentor within a single day.
    • Oversee prisoners’ daily routines to ensure order and facilitate constructive progress.
    • Work collaboratively with supporters, mental health counsellors, and legal teams to address prisoners’ needs.
  • Safety & Security:

    • Enforce house rules, emergency procedures, and safe operational protocols.
    • Monitor and report any risks or breaches of discipline.
  • Personal Growth:

    • Develop skills in conflict resolution, crisis management, and positive influence.
    • Engage in ongoing Professional Development Training to advance career opportunities.

Requirements

Eligibility

Must be 18 years or older at commencement of employment.

  • Physical & Medical Standards:

    • Pass a medical and fitness assessment (tests include vision, hearing, and general health—including blood pressure controls).
    • Tattoos are permitted but must not be offensive or discriminatory. Visible and facial tattoos are likely to be unreasonable unless for religious, cultural, or medical reasons.
  • Domicile Requirements:

    • For high-security (Category A) prisons, you must have resided in the UK for at least 3 years (e.g., as a student, visa holder, or settled individual).
  • Right to Work in the UK:

    • You’re responsible for ensuring you have, and maintain, a legal right to work in the UK.
    • Sponsorship options (unless guaranteed), such as a Skilled Worker Visa, are constrained by current immigration policies”.

Employability Requirements

  • Nationwide Accessibility:

Appoint Range & FLSXA (39–41 hours per week)

  • Graduate Pay Scale: £34,928 (37-hour week) to £39,334 (41-hour week).
  • Additional unsocial hours (20%) will contribute to salary and holiday allowance.

Note: The starting weekly training hours= 37 hours. Later-for highlightOfficial Contract-choices 6 hours/week allows:

  • 39 hours/week: £36,816 annually
  • 41 hours enforced miniseries £39,334

Flexibility

Prisons operate round-the-clock and seven days a week, necessitating:

  • Shift Working: Evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
