Prison Officer – HMP Stocken

Location: HMP Stocken, 2 Stocken Hall Rd, Stretton, Oakham, LE15 7RD

Starting salary: £38,816 per annum (for a 39-hour week, inc 20% unsocial hours allowance) City/Town: Melton Mowbray / Leicester / Peterborough Region: Midlands Vacancy type: Merit

The role requires working across various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety and security within the prison, including general supervision and danger management.
  • Build positive, constructive relationships with prisoners to encourage rehabilitation.
  • Apply professional judgment in decision-making to de-escalate conflict and resolve disputes.
  • Perform duties of a multi-disciplinary nature, including instructional tasks, report writing, and administration.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and institutional policies, supporting fair and consistent treatment.
  • Contribute to teams that maintain compliance with national policy and Prison Standards, including fire safety regulations.

Eligibility & Criteria

Must-Have Qualifications

You do not need formal qualifications, but must meet the following:

  • Age: At least 18 years old by the start of employment.
  • Medical and fitness test pass (including eyesight, hearing, and health assessments).
  • Visible tattoos (if any) must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
  • Nationality and work rights: Must be able to maintain the right to work in the UK, in alignment with Departmental and Civil Service Rules.

Nationality & Residency Requirements

Applicants must fall into one of the following categories:

  • UK nationals
  • Nationals of the Republic of Ireland
  • Commonwealth nationals with the right to work in the UK
  • EU/Swiss/Norwegian/Icelandic/Liechtensteiner nationals with settled or pre-settled status under EUSS.
  • Turkish nationals with the right to work in the Civil Service.

Transport

  • Shift patterns enforce 39-hour weeks (mean ing shifts across evenings, weekends, and public holidays).
  • Pension contribution: £10,698 annu ally towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension Scheme.

Selection Process

Stage 1: Online Tests

  • Judgment and numerical aptitude test
  • Values-based assessment (to gauge suitability for the role)

Stage 2: Online Assessment Centre (OAC)

Assesses key behaviours, strengths, and abilities including:

  • Communication & influencing
  • Quality service management
  • Effective decision-making
  • Empathy and care

Stage 3: Medical & Fitness Assessment

Testing:

  • Clarity of eyesight (with/without corrective glasses)
  • Hearing ability
  • Health screening (blood pressure etc.) Sponsorship notes: While visa sponsorship may be considered for eligible candidates, there is no guarantee under the current circumstances.
