Deputy Associate Director of Infection Prevention & Control

Salary: Band 8b (£76,888 - £82,251)

This board-level, senior clinical leadership role requires an experienced and highly motivated Deputy Associate Director of Infection Prevention & Control (IPC). You will provide expert advice in IPC strategy, policy, and practice, shaping clinical direction across acute and community health services within NHS Lothian.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide authoritative IPC clinical leadership, influencing:
    • Risk assessment and clinical management of transmissible infections
    • Infection surveillance, monitoring, and reporting
    • Facility maintenance and operational standards
    • Staff education, training, and development
  • Lead incident and outbreak management
  • Ensure best practice in IPC is promoted and embedded company-wide
  • Hold direct line management of Band 7 Geographical Lead staff (≈20 WTE) and clinical oversight of the wider IPC team (≈31 WTE total)
  • Deputise for the Associate Director of Infection Prevention & Control when required
  • Provide senior professional oversight and educational support to the IPC nursing service

About the Postholder

  • First Level Registered Nurse with a postgraduate qualification in Infection Prevention & Control
  • Substantial and demonstrable IPC experience, with a portfolio evidencing advanced knowledge and leadership
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary environments
  • Commitment to continuous professional development

Essential Requirements:

  • Full, valid UK driving licence
  • Access to a car (travel across NHS Lothian sites is mandatory)
  • Ability to work Monday–Friday (permanent, full-time)

Note on working hours: From 1 April 2026, the NHS working week will reduce from 37h to 36h. Pro-rata adjustments apply for part-time roles, with hourly pay increases maintaining overall compensation.
