About the Role

This is a permanent position (36 hours/week, Monday–Friday) at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) & Western General Hospital (WGH).

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Consultant Histopathologists to support the department’s requirements, including the dissection of complex specimens.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across dissection and management teams.
  • Train and assess colleagues’ competencies, including IBMS portfolio submissions.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 15189 UKAS accreditation protocols.

  • HCPC registration required.
  • MSc in Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent) mandatory.
  • Current relevant experience (proven) in Pathology services.
  • Evidence of significant experience in histological dissection.
  • Completion of the Diploma in Expert Practice in Histological Dissection (via IBMS).
  • Possession or commitment to obtaining the IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Histological Dissection within 4 years of appointment.
  • Active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Desirable Criteria

  • Proven track record of innovation, motivation, and outstanding communication skills.
  • Experience with training and competency assessments in a clinical setting.

About Your Working Environment

The Cellular Pathology Department delivers:

  • Routine Histopathology & Cytopathology
  • Mortuary & Specialist Pathology (Neuropathology, Paediatric, BMS dissection)
  • Mohs clinics in a satellite laboratory

The department operates at:

  • RIE (Bioquarter & Lab reception for specialised services like EM)
  • WGH (medical reporting)
  • Satellite lab at Lauriston Building (Mohs provision)
  • Mortuary services at WGH and SJH sites

Salary Scale

Band 8A: £65,125 – £70,303 per annum
