Key Responsibilities
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will:
- Provide advanced nursing care to neonatal patients in a neonatal specialist setting.
- Take responsibility for clinical assessments, diagnostic testing, and treatment planning as part of an enhanced remit.
- Ensure safe and effective care for newborns, acting with a degree of autonomy within organisational guidelines.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (paediatricians, neonatologists, allied health professionals).
- Represent NHS Lothian’s high standards of compassionate care.
- Support service improvement initiatives in neonatal practice.
- Contribute to education and mentorship of junior teams when appropriate.
Requirements
Professional Competencies
- Preferred qualifications: Post-Registration qualification in Neonatal Care (e.g., BSC, MSc, or PGCE).
- Valid nursing registration with the NMC (Nursing & Midwifery Council).
- Experience in neonatal patient assessment, including advanced neonatal life support.
- Demonstrated expertise in newborn care with a focus on multimorbid and critically ill newborns.
- Patient advocacy and consultation skills at an advanced level.

2. Evidence of Practice: Care, Support & Assessments
- Provide detailed examples of clinical assertiveness and leader decision-making in neonatal scenarios.
- Showcase how you address parental concerns with professionalism.
- Retrieve evidence of Heads Together ( sensory assessment) profiles or comparable tools as part of neonatal practice.
- Demonstrate knowledge of common neonatal disorders (e.g., congenital anomalies, infections, neurodevelopmental challenges) and your role in stabilisation, transfer, and ongoing care.
Role Considerations
- PVG Scheme: This role requires mandatory protection for vulnerable groups checks (Disclosure Scotland).
- Legislative Requirements: All successful candidates must meet UK working visa requirements as mandated by UK Visas and Immigration.
- Fixed-Term Contract: Due to the evolving nature of the role in a transforming neonatal service (linked to Enhance Service Framework), the post is on a 9-month fixed-term contract, extendable based on hospital requirements.
- Flexible Working: Open to discussions regarding reasonable adjustments for compliance with NHS exercise policies.
