Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Western General Hospital, NHS Lothian

The ANP will work closely with our Clinical Education and Training team, utilize preceptorship opportunities, and build on leadership strengths under our supportive and progressive organisational culture.


Responsibilities

The Advanced Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for:

  • Leading advanced clinical practice in direct patient care, diagnosing and treating conditions independently within our scope.
  • Providing autonomous, evidence-based advanced nursing consultations.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams (e.g., GPs, consultants, allied health professionals) to deliver comprehensive patient pathways.
  • Ensuring high standards of patient safety and person-centred care.
  • Mentoring junior clinicians, nurturing their development in advanced practice.
  • Representing nursing excellence and contributing to NHS Lothian’s strategic objectives in clinical governance and healthcare innovation.
  • Supporting research, education, and continuous professional improvement within the team.

Requirements

Spe a passion for advanced clinical practice and pleasing to deliver all-inclusive, high-quality nursing care. The ideal applicant meets the following minimum criteria:

  • Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in Nursing or Advanced Clinical Practice (or equivalent).
    • Registration with the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) as a qualified nurse, with additional credibility in specialist nursing (e.g., Advanced Saw Nurse Practitioner or equivalent).
    • Must hold a current PVG Scheme membership (Disclosure Scotland required) or a satisfactory PVG application for child or adult registration.
  • Experience:

    • Substantial experience in nursing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment (e.g., paediatrics, general surgery, emergency care, or adult health).
    • Familiarity with neurodiversity and disability awareness, able to support diverse patient needs.
    • Previous experience in leadership or mentoring roles within healthcare settings.
    • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a complex healthcare environment.
  • Competencies Needed:

    • Clinical Skills: Proficient in history-taking, physical examination, and evidence-based decision-making to diagnose and manage complex conditions.
    • Leadership: Inspirational management ability to guide multidisciplinary teams and uphold organisation values.
    • Communication: Competent written and verbal communication to facilitate patient consultations, education, and teamwork.
    • Commitment: Aligner with NHS web pillars: Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Inclusively.
