About the Role
NHS Lothian, in partnership with Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES), is seeking a passionate and dynamic Business Development Manager (Innovation).
HISES is one of Scotland’s three NHS Regional Innovation Hubs—hosted by NHS Lothian in collaboration with NHS Borders and NHS Fife—dedicated to connecting industry, academia, and healthcare to drive patient care transformation and economic growth in Scotland’s life sciences sector.
This role will span across the entire process of innovation development, linking industry (especially SMEs), researchers, and NHS partners to accelerate new health solutions from concept to clinical adoption.

- Build and strengthen partnerships within NHS Lothian, Scottish academia, and private sector life sciences firms.
- Lead and submit funding applications, securing internal and external investment to support innovation projects.
- Guide SMEs through NHS collaboration, including commercial and regulatory pathways, helping them apply NHS research & development funding frameworks.
- Identify transformative health innovation opportunities, conducting scoping, feasibility studies, and business modelling where needed.
- Act as a spokesperson for HISES at stakeholder events, conferences, and policy workshops.
Essential Requirements
To excel in this role, you should demonstrate:
- Significant experience in business development, innovation management, or R&D in a healthcare or life sciences context.
- **Em,new relevance-ciation. Sp-e.a.e.r.al-l Regulations, NHS contracts.
- A track record of securing funding, securing high-value partnerships, or advocating for innovation projects.
- In-depth knowledge of the healthcare or life sciences sector, including science, technology, and commercialisation.
- Outstanding stakeholder engagement skills—being able to connect with researchers, SMEs, policymakers, and clinicians alike.
- Strong analytical and project management capabilities, with experience navigating complex multi-partner initiatives.
- Excellent written communication to draft compelling reports, proposals, and funding applications.
- Understanding of public sector grants, sp نم ص, and commercial innovation support programs(e.g., Scottish Life Sciences Fund.
Bonus Attributes
Becoming a pivotal member of HISES’ team would also benefit from:
- Experience working with innovation accelerator programs, such as the NHS/NIHR interactions.
- Familiarity with UK-based research funding bodies, including UKRI, Networks, Informal Investigational Tools Programmes.
- A network of contacts in Scottish health and innovation hubs.
- Knowledge of intellectual property (IP) frameworks in biomedical and healthcare contexts.
