Children’s Audiology Assistant – Paediatric Hearing Assessment Role NHS Lothian, Edinburgh – Fixed Term (12 Months)
About the Role

This is a new graduate-friendly opportunity to develop paediatric audiology skills within a supportive, progressive team at NHS Lothian. The role supports the paediatric audiology service, working under senior audiologists and assistant staff in a purpose-built children’s hospital in Edinburgh. An ideal starting point for graduates looking to consolidate theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting.
Fixed-term position: 12 months with the potential to develop into permanent employment.
Responsibilities
Core Clinical Duties
- Conduct paediatric diagnostic hearing assessments for children ages 4+ years, including:
- Visual Reinforcement Audiometry
- Pure Tone Audiometry
- Performance Audiometry
- Tonndeau Bentley Otoscopy (TBOE) and Tympanometry
- Carry out face-to-face appointments at:
- The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP)
- Lauriston Hospital
- Support hearing aid fitting across all age groups.

Additional Testing
For children aged 0–18 years:
- Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
- Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR)
- Otoscopy & Tympanometry
Service Development Contributions
- Assist in Service-Level Agreements (SLAs)
- Contribute to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Participate in patient information audits and quality improvement initiatives
- Support the National Microtia Service, including referrals and implantable device fittings
Working Hours & Location
- Monday to Friday, core hours: 08:00–18:00
- Expected workload: 36 hours per week, based on service demand and clinic availability
- Primary site: Edinburgh, with additional appointments across Lothian sites
Requirements
Essential Criteria
- New graduate in Audiology with a background in clinical assessment techniques
- Ability to demonstrate diverse paediatric communication skills (e.g., engaging with children, handling anxiety/behavioural challenges)
- Understanding of NHS quality standards in audiology
- Reliable, proactive team player, able to prioritise tasks efficiently
Desirables
- Experience with ** audiometry (VRA/Peformance/TONEBOE)**
- Curious approach to service improvement and evidence-based practice
- Any volunteering/experience with children with hearing loss or paediatric wards

Legal & CVG Requirements
- PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme membership/access equivalent to Child/Adult regulations
- Upon vacancy achievement, we may require existing PVG members to apply affirmatively.
