Enthusiastic and Motivated Paediatric Audiology Support Officer – Fixed Term Role

About the Role

This fixed-term (12 months) role offers an excellent opportunity for graduates and experienced professionals to develop their paediatric audiology skills within a supportive, progressive team at the purpose-built Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh).

You’ll provide vital clinical support in a busy, high-quality NHS service, contributing to innovative audiology practices while gaining hands-on exposure to key diagnostic testing and service improvements.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Support

  • Work alongside paediatric audiologists and assistant staff to deliver clinical audiological assessments.
  • Conduct paediatric hearing assessments (aged 4 years+) in the ENT clinic at:
    • The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People
    • Lauriston Hospital
  • Perform high-quality face-to-face assessments including:
    • Pure Tone Audiometry
    • Performance Audiometry
    • TEAOE (Tympanometry, Electrocechleography, and Otoaceamic Emissions Testing) including:
      • ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response)
      • ASSR (Auditory Steady-State Response)
      • Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (for pre-verbal children).
  • Understand and carry out otoscopy and tympanometry to support diagnosis.
  • Support in the fitting of hearing aids for patients across all age groups.
  • Participate in the national microtia service, assisting with implantable device fitting.

Service Development and Quality Improvement

  • Support Service Improvement Initiatives, including:
    • Development and refinement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Patient information audits for clarity and compliance.
  • Actively engage in quality improvement projects, fostering a culture of continuous enhancement.
  • Assist in monitoring and analysing key performance indicators to ensure best-practice delivery.

About Your Team

You’ll join a friendly, supportive team focused on: ✔ High standards of care for children and young people. ✔ Innovation and training – ideal for those eagering to consolidate academic knowledge or develop paediatric audiology skills sooner rather than later. ✔ Team collaboration with multisciplinary professionals in the children’s health sector, including audiologists, ENT consultants, and estimologists.

Operating Hours – Standard working days are Monday to Friday (08.00–18.00), with 36-hour weekly coverage based on clinical needs and room allocation.

Location: Edinburgh – Work is split between:

  • The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People
  • Lauriston Hospital

Technical Qualifications & Skills

  • Qualification and registration as a Clinical Audiologist (or equivalent).
  • Experience in paediatric audiology settings is desirable but see links below regarding new graduates.
  • Strong technical skills in audiology testing, including:
    • ABR, ASSR, otoacoustic emissions, tympanometry.
    • Diagnostic reporting and interpretation.
  • Ability to interpret results and assist in patient-led recommendations.

Working with Communities & Vulnerable Groups

  • Proven ability to work supportively with children (0–18 years), their families, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience (or willingness) in patient/carer education on hearing health.
  • Empathy, patience, and effective communication with diverse populations.

Regulatory and Employment Requirements

  • Valid PVG (Protected Vulnerable Groups) Scheme membership/placement record – mandatory for this role.
    • Applicants will be required to apply for approval through Disclosure Scotland prior to employment; please note applications typically take 4 weeks to process.
  • Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this role may transition to a higher PVG certification level; potential updates aim to be communicated preplacement.
