Prescribing Support Pharmacy Technician – Primary Care

Grade: Band 5 Hours: 36 hrs (1 WTE) Location: East Lothian HSCP Posts available: 3.2 WTE Salary scale: £34,544 – £43,039 Pro rata

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has opened within East Lothian for experienced pharmacy technicians looking to work in primary care. Located in a scenic countryside and coastal area, this setting offers an ideal environment for building or advancing your career as a Prescribing Support Pharmacy Technician.

This role focuses on supporting GP-led clinical activities, including the Pharmacotherapy elements of the new GP contract. You’ll be part of a collaborative team delivering a mix of:

  • Prescribing support for GPs, including processing hospital letters
  • Cost-effective prescribing projects
  • Direct patient care activities

The team fosters a supportive, interconnected environment with experience across hospitals, community pharmacy, and retail, ensuring continuous professional development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with pharmacists and prescribing support teams to deliver effective pharmaceutical services.
  • Support GP prescribing decisions through structured medication review processes.
  • Manage pharmacotherapy services as part of the new GP contract, ensuring alignment with cost-effective and clinically sound prescribing.
  • Draft and review prescription updates, including management of hospital letters, discharges, and readmissions.

Essential Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Hold a National Certificate in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
  • Completion of one of the following packages (preferred prior to 2019):
    • HN Unit: Procedures for Pharmacy Dispensary Checking Technicians.
    • Accordion Checking Pharmacy Technician Award (e.g., from Buttercups or NPA).
  • Meet at least one of the following:
    • Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Pharmacy Services Development and Management.
    • Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level 3 in Pharmacy Services.
    • Alternative qualification/substitution must be justified through a Mapping Assessment Form + Portfolio of Evidence (for applicants without an HNC).
  • Essential soft skills:
    • Proactive mindset and commitment to evidence-based patient care.
    • Willingness to assist in operational improvements within primary care pharmacy services.
  • Part-time and full-time applications are welcome.
