Academic Director
Academic Director (Business & Technology School) – University of Huddersfield London Campus
Contract type: Full-time, Permanent Location: University of Huddersfield – London Campus, Stratford, Greater London
About the Role
Study Group will deliver postgraduate and undergraduate courses for the University of Huddersfield (UoH) at its new Business and Technology School in London. The new campus is designed to attract a diverse international student body, offering quality teaching while providing strong employability opportunities in London.
The Academic Director will lead the teaching team in the Business and Technology School, ensuring academic leadership of both UoH’s courses and Study Group’s pathway programmes. Key responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership & Academic Governance
- Provide inspirational leadership across academic teams, collaborating with campus management, UoH, and Study Group on learning & teaching (L&T) and research strategies.
- Own and implement learning and teaching (L&T) and research strategies, ensuring alignment with UoH’s and Study Group’s vision.
- Implement continuous improvement through a structured approach to L&T enhancement to achieve student success targets.
- Manage compliance with AACSB and BCS accreditation, UoH’s Handbook of Quality Assurance (QA) procedures, and other professional body requirements.
- Lead curriculum planning and staff resourcing, including recruitment to meet accreditation standards.
- Contribute to university partnership boards, committees, and Strategic Development Plans, reporting on outcomes to senior stakeholders.
Leadership, Management & Development
- Manage and mentor the academic team, ensuring individual growth through Study Group’s Individual Contribution & Development Process (ICDP).
- Maintain high academic standards, modelling quality teaching, research, publication, and professional engagement.
- Plan teaching and research workloads within budget constraints, ensuring operational efficiency.
- Organise peer observations and personal development reviews based on anonymised feedback and sector trends.
- Collaborate with the Industry and Engagement Director to embed employability and business engagement in curriculum and teaching.
- Identify and promote scholarly activity and research opportunities, mentoring staff and liaising with UoH on key projects.

Academic & Operational Management
- Oversee academic delivery of all courses (UoH and Study Group) to meet validation and quality standards, ensuring optimal student outcomes.
- Ensure the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is managed effectively, aligning with UoH’s frameworks and enhancement policies.
- Raise new course proposals for alignment with the Partnership Development Plan, working with the Head of School.
- Co-create internal partnerships with Student Experience and Quality Assurance teams to improve delivery.
- Address day-to-day academic issues, monitor academic performance metrics, and implement timely interventions.
- Represent Study Group and UoH in recruitment and outreach, safeguarding their reputation and brand.
Academic Standards, Quality Assurance & Enhancement
- Implement UoH’s QA processes for taught courses, ensuring compliance with UoH policies, Study Group frameworks, and professional accreditation standards.
- Ensure assessment integrity, fair handling of academic misconduct, and effective student feedback training.
- Co-lead course committees and Student Panels in consultation with the Student Experience Director, chairing meetings and reporting to UoH.
- Contribute to the Annual Evaluation Process, preparing reports for UoH and Study Group, and supporting QAA review participation.
- Attend and report on accreditation processes (e.g., AACSB, BCS) to maintain institutional legitimacy.
- Enhance student satisfaction by maintaining high-quality interactions and compliance with Prevent and regulatory requirements.
Partnership Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with UoH key contacts, ensuring alignment on curriculum, assessment, and quality policies.
- Facilitate cross-site engagement between UoH staff and London campus academics to maximise learner experience.
- Develop partnerships to grow the London Campus, leveraging UoH’s main campus resources.
- Conduct any additional duties as directed by the Head of School or Study Group senior leadership.

About You
Essential Requirements
- Terminal or doctoral degree in a relevant discipline.
- Established research profile (ABS 3/4)* with a track record of leading scholarly activity and mentorship in a business school.
- Fellowship of Advance HE (or eligible to achieve within 12 months of appointment).
- Proven experience in:
- Course and academic leadership & management
- Managing/staff supervision and resource deployment
- Leading a business school (business and technology, both UG/PG)
- Teaching and curriculum design in UK higher education
- Teaching international students
- Liaising with external accreditors (AACSB, BCS, etc.)
- Managing sizeable complex programmes
- Strong understanding of quality assurance frameworks, employability enhancement, and student success strategies
- Exceptional communication skills, with experience in partner liaison and governance.
Desirable
- Experience working with Study Group’s QA frameworks and/or UoH pathways
- Background in electronic/virtual learning environments (VLE)
- Breadth of experience with international student cohorts
