The MBBS Programme – SSC1 Role Overview
SSC1 is a core part of the MBBS curriculum, developing foundational skills for medical students:
- Academic writing
- Literature searching
- Critical appraisal
- Evidence synthesis
- Self-directed learning
Students explore biomedical science, social sciences, humanities, clinical practice, and professional interests beyond core studies.

This leadership position requires delivering academic and operational guidance for SSC1, including:
- Student briefings & guidance for cohorts
- Recruitment and support of tutors/markers
- Project proposal review and allocation
- Marking, moderation, and assessment processes
- Reporting, quality assurance, and continuous improvement
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Providing academic leadership for SSC1 in the MBBS SSC Programme.
- Leading student briefings and guidance where relevant.
- Recruiting and supporting tutors (and markers) for the module.
- Overseeing proposal reviews and student allocations.
- Developing marking guidance and moderation frameworks.
- Attending SSC, year, assessment, and examination board meetings.
- Producing reports and driving improvements from student feedback.
Essential Criteria
To be considered for this role, successful candidates must demonstrate:
- An academic or clinical academic background with a passion for undergraduate medical education.
- Teaching, supervision, assessment, or academic support experience in a healthcare or professional education context.
- A deep understanding of:
- Academic writing
- Literature review techniques
- Evidence appraisal
- Self-directed learning methodologies
- Strong organisation, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to inclusivity, student support, and excellence in education.
