What is the role?

We are seeking an Academy Doctor to lead, develop, and provide medical services to the Academy Programme, working closely with the medical team to provide a strategic and efficient delivery of SFC Sports Medicine.

What will you be doing?

  • Provide medical services to players of all ages within the Academy Programme, working closely with Academy Physiotherapists to ensure clinical issues and matchday cover is organised as well as to develop best practice guidelines for injury rehabilitation and align injury management across the wider medical department.
  • Liaise with players, parents, and staff, providing appropriate feedback on the treatment of injuries as well as education in terms of injury prevention, care, and post-match recovery.
  • Contribute to injury prevention strategies and work closely with Sports Scientists, Psychologists, Physiotherapists, and Coaches to ensure the best methods of Academy player physical and mental development are achieved.
  • With the Academy Physiotherapists, provide medical examinations to all players upon entry to the programme, including cardiac screening and concussion baseline testing and liaise with the appropriate people to ensure performance and alignment with the wider sports medicine processes.
  • Attend home matches for U18s and U21s, providing pitch-side trauma care and ensuring the emergency medical procedures are in place and regularly reviewed.
  • Take responsibility for the Medical Emergency Action Plan and relevant health and safety processes for the locations used by the Academy Programme, ensuring these are aligned with the wider department procedures, the FA, and any other relevant football authorities.
  • Accompany players to medical appointments and scans when required, building and maintaining a good working relationship with hospital departments and consultant colleagues to ensure optimum care for our players.
  • Maintain accurate medical records for all players, ensuring they are up to date and stored securely, as well as all insurance papers (bluefin etc) are completed.

Essential Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Medical degree.
  • Licence to practice.
  • Diploma in sports and exercise medicine.
  • Understanding of people management skills.
  • Success in working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Range of clinical, employment, and life experiences appropriate to working in an elite and high expectation environment.

Desirable Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Member of faculty sports and exercise medicine.
  • Area or equivalent pitch-side emergency care qualification.
  • Safeguarding qualification.
  • Ultrasound skills.
