Position Summary
The Strategic Account Executive (SAE) is responsible for the overall account strategy, renewal outcomes, and executive relationships for a defined portfolio of large, complex employer pharmacy benefit manager clients. This role is a senior individual contributor position.
The SAE leads renewal strategy, guides financial decisions, and serves as a trusted partner to client and consultant stakeholders. The role focuses on judgment, clarity, and data-informed decision-making, not day-to-day service execution.
Key Responsibilities

Account Strategy & Executive Relationships
- Own the multi-year account strategy for assigned clients.
- Serve as the primary executive-level contact for client leadership.
- Help clients understand options, tradeoffs, and implications of complex pharmacy benefit decisions.

Renewals, Retention & Growth
- Lead renewal strategy and negotiations, in partnership with underwriting, legal, and finance.
- Develop and present clear recommendations on pricing, guarantees, and solution design.
- Identify growth opportunities through disciplined financial and strategic evaluation aligned to client goals.
- Leverage analytics platforms and AI-enabled tools to monitor performance and identify risks or opportunities.

Financial Leadership
- Maintain working knowledge of account economics, including drug trend, pricing, rebates, and guarantees.
- Interpret financial analyses and explain results clearly to client and internal leaders.
- Balance client value with long-term business sustainability.

Consultant & Market Engagement
- Manage relationships with consultants influencing assigned accounts.
- Represent the organization clearly and professionally in competitive situations.
- Bring relevant market and regulatory considerations into client discussions.

Internal Coordination
- Provide clear direction to internal partners, including Account Executives and functional teams.
- Escalate risks, resourcing needs, or execution issues through established leadership channels.
- Diagnose client pain points and partner across the matrix to drive to solution.
Location & Travel
- U.S.-based role with remote or CVS Health corporate location flexibility
- Up to 40% travel, including overnight and short-notice travel as business needs require
Measures of Success
- Strong client retention with appropriate margins
- Clear, timely, and defensible renewal strategies
- Credible relationships with client and consultant executives
- Effective anticipation and management of financial or strategic risk
- High-quality decision-making that improves long-term client and portfolio outcomes
Required Qualifications
- Has 7+ years of healthcare or managed care experience, with exposure to large employer accounts
- Has led complex renewals and pricing discussions
- Is comfortable translating financial information into clear recommendations
- Can engage confidently with senior client and consultant stakeholders
- Exercises sound judgment under pressure and ambiguity
- Understands both the economic and operational realities of pharmacy benefit management delivery
- Strong digital and AI fluency, with the ability to apply advanced tools to complex judgment and client decision making
Preferred Qualifications
- Senior-level experience managing large employer or health plan relationships
- Experience in a pharmacy benefit manager sales or service executive role
- Background operating in regulated or policy-influenced healthcare environments

Pay Range
- The typical pay range for this role is: $68,000.00 - $174,134.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography, and other relevant factors.
