Accountant Apprentice

About The Role
This is a fantastic opportunity to start your career in finance through a Level 7 Professional Accountant apprenticeship, equivalent to a master’s degree, while earning and gaining hands-on experience.
You’ll join the Finance Function at VolkerWessels UK, supporting a £1.5bn UK Business. Over the course of the programme, you’ll rotate through different finance teams such as:
- Accounting & Reporting
- Commercial Finance
- Group Finance
- Treasury
- Tax
Alongside your day-to-day role, you’ll complete a fully funded Level 7 Professional Accountant apprenticeship, following either an ACCA or CIMA pathway, with day release for study. The programme is designed to lead to professional qualification and long-term career opportunities within the business.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll contribute from day one, with responsibilities growing as your knowledge and confidence develop. Typical activities include:
- Preparing and posting journal entries and supporting general ledger maintenance
- Assisting with monthly management accounts and board packs
- Performing balance sheet reconciliations and controls
- Analysing financial data and supporting variance analysis
- Supporting budgeting and forecasting
- Assisting with statutory accounts and external audit processes
- Supporting compliance activities (e.g. VAT and Corporation Tax)
- Working closely with finance colleagues and wider business teams

About You
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for individuals with strong academic ability, curiosity about finance and the motivation to build a professional career.
You’ll Need
- A strong academic background, including:
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade 5 or above
- 3 A-Levels with at least 112 UCAS points (or equivalent)
- A genuine interest in finance, accounting or business
- The right to work permanently in the UK
- The ability to commit to a structured apprenticeship programme
You’ll Bring
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- A logical, organised approach to work
- Good communication skills and the confidence to work with others
- Attention to detail and pride in accurate work
- The ability to manage deadlines and work under pressure
- Confidence using Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
No previous finance experience is required — we’ll teach you.
About The Apprenticeship
- Level: 7 (Professional Accountant)
- Equivalent to: Master’s degree
- Qualification routes: ACCA or CIMA
- Duration: Approximately 36 months
- Training: Minimum 20% off-the-job learning (study, workshops, coaching)
- Cost: Fully funded through the apprenticeship levy
You’ll be supported by experienced finance professionals, a training provider and a dedicated coach throughout the programme.
