Accountant

Accountant – Financial Management Team

Suffolk County Council Location: Endeavour House, Ipswich (Hybrid) Salary: £34,434 per annum (pro rata for part-time) Hours: 37 hours per week (flexible working options) Contract: Permanent

As an Accountant, you will support directorates in meeting their financial obligations while contributing to efficiency and sustainability initiatives. Your work will directly impact how the council’s resources are managed to serve Suffolk’s communities.


Responsibilities

You will deliver essential support across multiple tasks, including:

  • Financial oversight and reporting:
    • Input, analyse, and interpret financial data to inform budget monitoring and forecasting, ensuring informed decision-making.
    • Produce reports for senior leaders and contribute to statutory account preparations.
  • Advisory and support role:
    • Translate financial information for non-financial colleagues, clarifying budget management and resource allocation.
    • Advise on financial systems, reporting, and troubleshooting queries.
  • Process improvement and compliance:
    • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve financial controls.
    • Maintain accurate reconciliations to uphold integrity and transparency in financial records.
  • Collaborative contribution:
    • Work closely with budget holders and business teams across directorates.
    • Develop and support financial systems and practices within the team.

This role offers varied challenges and a supportive Finance team, providing growth opportunities in accounting and finance while making a tangible difference in Suffolk’s public services.


Requirements

Essential:

  • AAT qualification, progress toward a CCAB-accredited accountancy qualification (e.g., CIPFA, CIMA, ACCA), or equivalent knowledge/skills.
  • Proven finance experience, preferably in a local government or council setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to explain complex financial concepts to non-specialists.
  • Strong analytical abilities to interpret data, reconcile discrepancies, and generate accurate reports across multiple systems.
  • High levels of proficiency in numeracy, literacy, and IT (e.g., financial software such as FIMS/Ke hjälp).
