Accredited Clinical Coder/Experienced Clinical Coder
Are you an IHRIM Accredited Clinical Coder or experienced Clinical Coder working within an acute NHS hospital setting?
The Clinical Coding team at our hospital site Hinchingbrooke are looking to recruit to our substantive team of multi skilled specialist Clinical Coders. The ideal candidate will be ACC qualified with experience in coding a broad range of clinical specialties.
Applicants must demonstrate excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with clinicians and all relevant support staff to ensure our coded data reflects accurately the care of our patients. Excellent analytical and judgement skills are essential in this role as is good working knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy across a range of clinical specialties. You will be responsible for managing your own workload each day within the usual deadlines for submission of data.
We would welcome applications from experienced clinical coders (Band 4) without the IHRIM qualification with the option to study towards the National Clinical Coding Qualification.
Main duties of the job
- Excellent analytical and judgement skills are essential as is a good working knowledge of national clinical coding standards, medical terminology and human anatomy.
- Translation of clinical information into diagnostic and procedure codes from patient health records scanned on to an electronic document management system and variety of other electronic sources.
- Applicants must demonstrate excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with clinicians and all relevant support staff to ensure our coded data reflects accurately the care of our patients.
- Conduct validation exercises as required with the responsible Consultant to ensure correct assignment of diagnostic and procedure codes and to identify gaps in clinical documentation to support clinical coding.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- IHRIM Accredited Clinical Coder
- Educated to A Level qualifications in sciences e.g. Biology or equivalent knowledge acquired through work based training
Desirable:
- AMSPAR Certificate in Medical Terminology
- MOST qualifications, MS Excel
Experience
Essential:
- Ability to code all specialties
- Communicate complex coding rules to clinical and non-clinical staff and external agencies
- Experience of working as a clinical coder in the NHS
- Use of hospital administrative and clinical systems
- Demonstrate an understanding of clinical coding and its uses
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomical and physiological terms
- Attendance at Clinical Coding refresher workshops
