Actuary
Senior Actuary (Actuarial Analysis & Support) – London
About the Role
Looking for a role in which you can make a meaningful impact on the strategic underwriting decisions our business makes? This position is designed to provide advanced actuarial analyses, rooted in generally accepted actuarial principles, while offering guidance and mentorship to junior actuaries.
The completed analyses will empower internal stakeholders to make data-driven decisions across core actuarial fields, including:
- Pricing
- Reserving
- Reinsurance
- Corporate Reporting
- or a combination of these areas
Your work will ensure the business builds confidence in terms of risk, pricing and financial stability.
The Opportunity
You will join a dynamic team of 33 actuarial professionals supporting Markel’s International organisation across multiple geographical locations. While the team operates primarily in London, the role is flexible, blending remote and office work for collaboration with Markel’s global offices and US-based colleagues.
Core Responsibilities
- Conduct advanced actuarial analyses and act as a subject matter expert in actuarial principles and concepts
- Guide non-actuarial stakeholders with technically sound advice, represent the department on cross-functional teams, and ensure findings are presented effectively
- Support corporate objectives through clear communication and knowledge sharing
Key Tasks

Provide technical and operational support to the product leader, including:
- Resource management and workload prioritisation
- Reviewing key deliverables
- Supporting the product team

Maintain strong relationships with underwriting divisions:
- Liaise on large account pricing, pricing tool validation, reserving, and capital model parameterisation
- Challenge and support pricing and reserving activities

- (If applicable) Line-manage a junior actuarial student
- Own core processes that deliver key external outputs
- Offer support to the broader Markel International Actuarial team
Qualifications & Must-Haves
To thrive in this role, you’ll need:

Keen ability to manage and engage senior stakeholders, including Finance, Underwriting, Capital, Reinsurance, and Claims

Proven track record of effective team collaboration, including workload prioritisation

Proved proficiency across multiple actuarial disciplines, particularly in pricing and reserving fields

Hands-on experience in:
- Engaging with senior underwriters to deliver technical results
- Coordinating projects producing portfolio-management analyses
- Presenting to executives in formal settings

Insight into actuarial elements of business planning as well as parameterisation related to underwriting and reserve risk

Commitment to in-office presence (admin requirement: minimum of two London office days per week)
