Role Overview
Start your career as an Actuarial Reserving Graduate at Hastings Direct. We’re looking for a highly motivated and intellectually curious individual to join our Group Actuarial Function.
In this role, you will:
- Help estimate the cost of future claims for our Motor and Household insurance portfolios while developing strong actuarial and analytical skills.
- Work across both Reserving and Capital Modelling teams, providing exposure to Solvency UK requirements.
- Contribute to the development of modern actuarial tooling, including Python and AI-driven solutions, automating processes and enhancing analysis.
Your specific responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the production of monthly and quarterly reserving analyses, including:
- Maintaining claims development triangles.
- Contributing to the estimation of IBNR (Incurred But Not Reported) and ultimate claims costs using techniques like:
- The Chain Ladder method.
- Bornhuetter-Ferguson models.
- Analysing and interpreting trends in claims experience.
- Working with large datasets in SQL to ensure accurate outputs.
- Helping build and maintain reserving models.
- Developing Python-based tools to enhance analysis and automate processes, including exploration of AI-enabled solutions and agent-based workflows.
- Supporting capital reporting activities, building an understanding of key capital drivers.
- Collaborating closely with teams across Pricing, Underwriting, Claims, and Finance to deliver data-driven insights.

Requirements
You will have:
- A numerical or actuarial degree with:
- A first-class honours degree (or predicted first-class honours).
- Strong analytical ability and attention to detail.
- Considerable problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Familiarity with actuarial concepts.
- Experience in data analysis or coding, preferably in Python and SQL.
- An interest in Python for modelling and automation.
- Interest in AI and advanced analytics workflows.
