Actuarial Analyst/Subject Matter Expert (Senior Actuarial Professional)
About the Role
Looking for a role that will have a meaningful impact on the strategic underwriting decisions our business makes?
The primary purpose of this position is to provide advanced actuarial analyses, based upon generally accepted actuarial principles, and to guide and support junior Actuaries. These analyses will inform internal stakeholders for data-driven decision-making and may cover key actuarial areas such as pricing, reserving, reinsurance, or corporate reporting.

Here, within our global network of problem-solvers, you’ll contribute to impactful projects while growing alongside colleagues who encourage ambition.
The Opportunity
You’ll join a team of 33 actuarial professionals supporting Markel’s International Organisation across multiple regions. Based primarily in London, this hybrid role includes remote and office-based work with collaboration across global offices. Travel is expected for meetings, conferences, and visits.
This role focuses on:
- Delivering advanced actuarial analyses and acting as a subject-matter expert in actuarial principles.
- Guiding non-actuarial stakeholders, representing the department in cross-functional teams, and presenting findings to senior leadership.
- Supporting corporate goals through effective communication and knowledge sharing.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
