Acute Speech & Language Therapist
Permanent Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist and 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract Role
About the Role
Join our dynamic and supportive acute inpatient team at the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) Trust. We are recruiting through additional funding for:
- 1 permanent full-time (Band 5) post
- 1 additional 12-month fixed-term contract post (to cover maternity leave)
Ideal candidates:
- Newly-qualified therapists or experienced specialists with an interest in acute care development.
- Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) with enthusiasm to grow skills in this field.
Location: University Hospitals of Leicester Trust Base: Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service Sites: Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital & Glenfield Hospital
Reporting To: Operational Lead for SLT and working as part of a growing acute wards team, with potential rotations into specialist areas such as:
- Brain Injury Unit
- Neurorehabilitation Unit
- Stroke Rehabilitation Unit
- Acute Stroke Unit
Collaboration: Opportunities to work closely with stroke, neurology, critical care, and head and neck cancer SLT specialists.
Additional Services Provided:
- Inpatient dysphagia assessment (FEES)
- Outpatient videofluoroscopy (community service)
Key Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to adults with acute communication and/or swallowing difficulties across inpatient units.
- Deliver high-quality SLT input in line with NICE guidelines, NCSD core ensembles, and Trust policies.
- Rotate through clinical areas to build diverse expertise across:
- Trauma & orthopaedics
- Stroke & brain injury rehabilitation
- Post-surgical care (e.g. head and neck cancer).

Multi-disciplinary Engagement
- Work closely with nursing, medical teams, and allied health professionals.
- Provide consultation and collaborative support to MDTs.
- Help deliver training sessions for nursing and medics where relevant.
- Be an ambassador for speech and language therapy within the trust.
Clinical Engagement & Development
- Be part of an operative acute interface team led by Senior/Lead SLTs.
- Support patientcentred, safe, and personable approaches to assessment and intervention.
- Participate in regular supervision (1:1 and peer)

Requirements & Qualifications
✔ Essential Criteria
- Qualified Speech and Language Therapist (HCPC-registered).
- Minimum HCPC Registration.
- Experience (if any) or strong interest in hospital speech & language therapy is advantageous.
✔ Desirable
- Recent or relevant hospital and acute SLT experience.
- Experience in NEES (neurology, stroke, and critical care) concepts or dysphagia management.
- Flexibility across various academic hospitals within the trust.
