Associate Director, Capability Lead

About This Role

The Associate Director, Capability Lead is a critical leadership position responsible for overseeing system delivery, service design, and continuous improvement within a specific capability domain.

Reporting to the Director, Digital & Platform Engineering, this role functions as a "mini CIO" for the designated capability area, ensuring alignment with the IT department’s technical strategy, budget, and roadmap.

The position demands detailed management of agile teams, hybrid resourcing models, and third-party supplier partnerships while delivering robust, secure, and resilient business systems, including M365 Copilot, Smart IT, Digital Devices, and AV integration.


Key Responsibilities

1. System Delivery & Maintenance

  • Lead and oversee full-stack system development, support, and maintenance within the capability area.
  • Work with Product Teams to align backlogs and prioritise sustainable operational requirements.
  • Ensure platforms meet Bank SLAs for production service and service level reporting standards.
  • Transform delivery groups into metrics-based, lean, Agile organisations using Scrum, SAFe, Kanban, CI/CD, and DevOps.
  • Collaborate with the Head of QA to enforce quality assurance and integrity of systems.

2. Strategic Leadership & Agile at Scale

  • Drive Agile at scale, orchestrating cross-functional squads/teams and aligning them with IT strategy.
  • Define and implement :effective planning, backlog management, and leadership across hybrid (in-house + outsourced) teams.
  • Report on team performance (burn-up, burndown, velocity) and eliminate technical debt strategically.

3. IT Standards, Governance, and Risk Management

  • Contribute to technical policies and IT standards, ensuring compatibility with Bank governance models.
  • Improve general control landscapes through preventative automation and risk mitigation.
  • Lead underpinning controls to replace manual, detective processes.

4. Third-Party Partnerships & Hybrid Teams

  • Manage third-party suppliers (likely 2+), ensuring their contributions align with Agile best practices (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
  • Coordinate team activities and deliverable timelines effectively.

5. Financial and Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor budgets, forecast spend, and identify modernisation/automation efficiencies.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, technical ruthlessness, and executable improvement backlogs.

6. People Leadership

  • Mentor, coach, and develop teams in Agile methodologies, ensuring quality excellence.
  • Champion Bank’s behavioural competencies, integrity, and ethical standards.
  • Actively manage recruitment, performance reviews, compensation, and career progression.

7. Additional Responsibilities (Temporary – DW Product Owner on Maternity Leave)

  • Assume overall vision leadership for capability area, including value justification and BUsiness Case approvals.
  • Develop and own technology roadmaps, aligning with strategic goals.
  • Drive adoption, monitor usability, and ensure stakeholder alignment at Scrum and business levels.
  • Coordinate cross-capability roadmaps and prioritise high-level backlogs.

Key Statistics & Context

  • Annual spend & investment: £3–5M operational, ~£50M capital over 3 years.
  • Structured as: Autonomous, agile-first domain with 4–6 direct reports and peer-level multi-report matrix.
  • Exposure to: Bespoke software, third-party SaaS engagements, and distributed teams (UK/global locations).

Requirements & Experience

Core Professionals

  • Leading Agile practitioner with PMI-ACP or equivalent certification.
  • 3+ years of Associate Director or equivalent leadership in IT support/maintenance development.
  • Demands-wide software knowledge, but with strong Agile leadership rather than deep domain expertise.
  • Experience managing hybrid teams (including 3rd party vendors) using Agile frameworks.
