INTERNAL VACANCY

Do you have the drive to unlock York’s growth potential? Building more houses, creating more opportunities, driving good growth with culture and heritage at its heart?

Our ambitions are clear, our challenges understood, the world is watching.

Right now the council is leading on development of the new Local Plan (York 2045), working lock step with the combined authority, developers, and partners to deliver York Central (45ha brownfield site), develop more affordable housing, and improved transform infrastructure with sustainable transport at its heart. We are also on a journey to be net zero by 2030 with renewable energy strategic business cases underway.

Reaching every part of the city to deliver over £500m of capital schemes, you will unlock economic, health and environmental benefits, and leave a lasting legacy for today’s residents and future generations to enjoy.

Skills

You will lead the City Development workforce and deliver the council’s strategic development, regeneration, strategic planning, economic growth, culture, strategic skills and capital investment functions to:

  • Shape and deliver the city’s long-term spatial, economic, skills and infrastructure ambitions, ensuring sustainable, inclusive and climate-ready growth that actively supports sustainable development and helps reduce costs for residents.
  • Oversee the delivery of major capital programmes across housing, transport, highways, schools, public buildings and regeneration areas.
  • Provide leadership for strategic planning, economic development, inward investment, regeneration, strategic infrastructure and the city’s skills agenda.
  • Ensure the council’s statutory strategic planning responsibilities are discharged effectively and in line with national legislation, local policy and the Council Plan.
  • Lead the city’s engagement with the Combined Authority, government departments, businesses, developers, investors, education and training providers, cultural partners and other key stakeholders to secure investment and align post-16 skills development with business need.
  • Play a key leadership role in engaging with the city’s cultural sector to help drive and promote York’s culture and heritage.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
