Additional Learning Support (ALS) Tutor

Role Purpose

As an Additional Learning Support (ALS) Tutor, your responsibilities include providing tailored support for apprentices with additional learning needs, disabilities, or barriers to learning. You will ensure that:

  • Appropriate interventions, adjustments, and resources are implemented and reviewed.
  • Collaboration occurs across tutors, employers, and external support agencies to foster a fully inclusive learning environment.
  • Learners progress successfully and achieve their qualifications.

This position requires a methodical and organised approach, along with an emphasis on mentoring individuals while adhering to the highest possible quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with a caseload of apprentices, assigned by the ALS Manager, to motivate and support them effectively.
  • Conduct regular ALS reviews with learners, documenting all support provided to ensure funding claims compliance.
  • Maintain clear communication with tutors and ALS Manager regarding learner progress and necessary adjustments.
  • Assist in improving accessibility and inclusivity within apprenticeship training programs.
  • Deliver sensitive feedback to learners after assessments, accompanied by necessary support.
  • Refer learners requiring specialised support to the ALS Manager.
  • Ensure that systems are updated following ALS reviews, demonstrating proficiency in IT skills across multiple platforms.
  • Help organize and participate in support sessions, standardisation, and drop-ins for tutors.
  • Provide training and guidance to tutors on supporting apprentices with additional learning needs (ALN), ensuring best practice adherence.
  • Engage in continued professional development (CPD) to further understanding of ALS strategies and support methods.
  • Collaborate closely with employers to implement workplace adjustments and create inclusive learning environments.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns following established procedures.

Person Specification

You must combine professional and personal experience in Additional Learning Support (ALS)—having a passion for supporting individuals with ALN—to:

  • Motivate learners to achieve personal and professional goals.
  • Adopt an individualised yet organised approach to student support.
  • Respect diligence and consistency, delivering excellence in your work.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals having additional learning needs, preferably within an apprenticeship, education, or work-based learning context.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams.
  • Strong organisation, time-management, and multi-priority handling capabilities.

Desirable

  • A Level 3 SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) qualification.
  • Experience using learner management systems and tracking tools.
  • Familiarity with assistive technologies and accessibility tools.
  • Understanding of the apprenticeship framework.
  • Use of Cognassist assessment tools.

For home/field-based roles, you will need:

Salary and Benefits

  • Base Salary: £30,000
  • Remote & Travel-Entitled Role: Mileage reimbursement included.
