Part-Time Program Medical Director (PMD), Indigenous Health

Role and Facility Information

We are seeking a Part-Time Program Medical Director (PMD), Indigenous Health to advance cultural safety, humility, and reconciliation across Fraser Health Authority. This role will take shared responsibility in ensuring high-quality health services and continuous quality improvement for culturally safe service delivery, addressing Indigenous-specific racism, and narrowing health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Systemic Change

  • Drive systemic improvements in healthcare for Indigenous peoples across all Fraser Health (FH) sites
  • Engage regional partners to guide service goals and implement system-wide change that positively impacts Indigenous patients and medical staff
  • Collaborate with Site & Departmental Medical Leaders on physician governance issues
  • Advocate for culturally safe care environments through strategic partnerships with governments, organizations, and Indigenous communities

Cultural Competency & Relationship Building

  • Collaborate with Indigenous communities to ensure their needs inform regional Aboriginal Health program planning
  • Act as an ambassador for Indigenous Cultural Safety, delivering lectures, initiating Cultural Safety Committees, and driving education among physician colleagues
  • Engage external stakeholders, including:
    • BC College of Physicians & Surgeons
    • Medical Advisory Committees
    • Medical Directors of BC
    • Aboriginal Health Leadership Committees

Program Development & Strategic Alignment

  • Establish processes, targets, and key performance indicators to integrate cultural safety into clinical practice
  • Align with Fraser Health & Ministry of Health strategic plans, ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals
  • Facilitate innovative research and clinical learning opportunities in partnership with Indigenous academic and clinical leaders

Time Commitment

  • 0.2–0.4 FTE (with flexible scheduling to support existing practice)
  • Supportive team available for collaboration and operational assistance

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies

  • Medical Degree with 10+ years of clinical practice experience
  • Eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC
  • Strong lived experience or deep connection to Indigenous and First Nations communities
  • Demonstrated understanding of systemic barriers faced by Indigenous peoples in healthcare
  • Experience in medical leadership (clinical or community setting preferred)
  • Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action
  • Exceptional relationship-building & communication skills with cultural humility and sensitivity

Strong Preference Given To:

  • Candidates who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit)

  • Administrative Contract
  • Flexible work schedule to support emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically connecting with Indigenous-led events, ceremonies, and communities
