Adult OPAT Staff Nurse

Band 5 Registered Nurse – Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) | University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust


Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is excited to offer an opportunity for a Band 5 Registered Nurse to join our dynamic Adult Outpatients Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) team, where commitment to high-quality patient care and innovative practice are celebrated.

A Day in the Role

Working within a multidisciplinary team (including Consultant Microbiologists, Pharmacists, and Band 7 Specialist Nurses), you will:

  • Deliver IV antibiotic care for complex infectious diseases outside traditional inpatient settings.
  • Manage a variety of patient caseloads, personalising treatment plans for effective outcome-centred care.
  • Support high-quality, personalised, safe treatments in community-based settings.
  • Never have a repeated day—your role blends variety, learning, and direct patient impact.

Hours: A full-time commitment (Monday–Friday), with occasional weekend work potential. Mobility: A UK driving licence is advantageous, given potential on-site support needs.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Team Collaboration

  • Ensure safe, timely, and effective IV antibiotic therapy for patients in the community/home environment.
  • Collaborate with the MDT (Clinical Pharmacists, Doctors, Allied Healthcare Professionals) to maintain coordination of care.
  • Facilitate consultation, education, and support for patients and carers regarding treatment.
  • Supervise or shadow nurses in practice, aligning with taught learning and skill application.
  • Ensure effective ward based referral processes within Adult Outpatient settings.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Degree/Diploma qualified Nurse registered with the NMC on an appropriate part of the register.
  • Proven knowledge of acute health service trends and changes, demonstrating awareness of the evolving infectious disease landscape.
  • Self-aware accountability – Understanding role, responsibilities and impact of practice on care standards.
  • Evidence of mentoring or supervisory skills (e.g., with Band 4 nurses and/or students, through formal teaching roles).
  • Reflective practice from undergraduate/postgraduate training, demonstrating evolving clinical decision-making skills.
  • Active management of infection control and risk reduction (e.g., shared practice, advocacy for safety practices).
  • Evidence of professional development (CPD, structured learning, feedback-active approach to training).
  • Flexibility and self-reliance, with capacity to think critically under pressure.

Desirable Criteria

  • Degrees/certifications beyond registration, e.g., Specialistcovery post-registration qualification in Infection Prevention/CiH/Bacteriology.
  • Relevant practice experience, such as infectious disease, intravenous therapy, community nursing, or chemotherapy services.
  • Previous teaching (formal tutor roles, mentoring Mentored Experiences, or formal teaching engagement).
