About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Echocardiography service at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB), across:
- Royal Derby Hospital
- Queen’s Hospital Burton
- Community Diagnostic Centres
We are seeking an experienced Advanced Clinical Physiologist / Healthcare Scientist who aligns with our vision of delivering consistently outstanding patient care.
The Service
The Royal Derby Hospital echo department is:
- BSE accredited in:
- Transthoracic echocardiography
- Training & transoesophageal echocardiography
- Working towards stress echo accreditation
- Provides adult transthoracic and transoesophageal studies
- Supports regional congenital, paediatric, and ACHD clinics
Key Service Offerings:
- Established physiologist-led services, including:
- Exercise stress echocardiography
- Contrast studies
- Valve surveillance clinics
The successful candidate will:
- Be BSE accredited in adult transthoracic echocardiography (minimum 1 year post-accreditation)
- Join a progressive Advanced Clinical Physiologist team in Echocardiography and Non-Invasive Cardiology
- Receive professional development support, including:
- Attendance at BSE conferences
- Relevant training

Responsibilities
Minimum Requirements:
- Proven competency in adult transthoracic echocardiography
- Ability to assist in advanced investigations, such as:
- Stress echocardiography
- Head-Up Tilt Testing (HUTT)
Desirable Skills & Experience: ✔ Experience in paediatric echocardiography ✔ Experience performing and reporting:
- Advanced non-invasive cardiology investigations
- Cardiac stress testing
- Bubble & contrast studies
- 2D & 3D echocardiography
- Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE)
- Pericardiocentesis procedures in cardiac catheter labs ✔ Multidisciplinary teamwork in complex procedures ✔ Commitment to ongoing professional development, including:
- Stress echocardiography
- 3D echocardiography
- Speckle tracking & strain analysis ✔ Participation in:
- Physiologist-led Valve Surveillance Clinics
- Echocardiography on-call service
Requirements
- BSE-accredited in adult transthoracic echocardiography (minimum 1 year post-accreditation)
- Demonstratable professional development spirit
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Experience in advanced cardiac ultrasound investigations (preferred)
- Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care
