Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer – Electronics Products
Location: Yeovil (Hybrid – 3 days at office, 2 days work from home) Sector: Aerospace (Environmental Control Systems & Life Support Systems)
We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Yeovil-based team. This role will provide crucial mechanical design support to our electronic controllers team, interface with broader system development teams, and deliver advanced solutions for complex aerospace Electrical Control Systems.
About the Role
The Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer will drive concept-to-detailed design for new products and tooling, collaborating across project teams to ensure fast-tracked, cost-effective solutions while maintaining high manufacturing standards. Key areas of responsibility include:
- Environmental Control Systems (ECS)
- Life Support Systems (LSS)
- Product reconfigurations and aerospace safety compliance

Responsibilities
Primary Duties
- Serve as the site focal point for all electronic product mechanical engineering, providing cross-team technical expertise.
- Develop detailed designs/layouts aligned to customer specifications and project constraints, balancing performance, manufacturability and cost.
- Support cost estimates for proposals and feasibility evaluations via CAD, FEA and traditional stressed-component analysis.
- Lead drawing packs (production, prototype and assembly documentation) including tolerancing and geometry (GD&T).
- Monitor industry advancements in lean/ Six Sigma and integrate best practice into design workflows.
- Liaise with production teams to optimise designs for modern manufacturing ( machining, automation,agnostic tooling) while analysing production constraints.
- Drive engineering change requests and quality waivers/deviations as part of compliance controls.
- Deliver mechanical input for PCB design (EMC, thermal, shock/vibrational load effects) and multi engineering team engagements.
- Hit project milestones as part of a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Expertise
- Minimum 5 years’ CAD experience in: PTC Creo (preferred) and Siemens NX.
- Significant design background for electronic products, encompassing:
- Electrical safety and protection (EMC/ESD).
- Vibration/shock analysis (impact mitigation strategies).
- Thermal management solutions.
- PCB mounting rigour and component packaging.
- Strong GDS&T understanding (GD&T), with proficiency in applying it to tight tolerancing standards.
- Experience implementing best practice for design efficiency and reliability, particularly in aerospace.
- Exposure to manufacturing micro- and macro-tool techniques valuable.

Preferred (not essential):
- Leverage tools like Ansys, vibration analysis packages (jridging), or alternate FAsett surrounds.
- Prior lean/ Six Sigma work in a manufacturing context.
- Interface knowledge of hybrid structural-software co-design.
Qualifications
- Appropriate degree-based qualifications in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or comparable professional conversion training (e.g., Incorporated Engineer), endorsed by a recognised body.
