Advanced Public Health Practitioner
Are you passionate about improving public health and making a positive impact on the community? West Berkshire Council is seeking an experienced and dedicated Advanced Public Health Practitioner to join our Public Health Team. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the delivery of essential public health services and work alongside a supportive and professional team.
The Advanced Public Health Practitioner will lead and manage a portfolio of programmes relating to drugs and alcohol, supporting the development, commissioning, implementation, performance management and evaluation of evidence-based interventions that reduce substance-related harm and improve population health outcomes. The postholder will work across the council, health system and wider partnership landscape to strengthen prevention, treatment, recovery and harm reduction responses, with a strong focus on reducing health inequalities and improving outcomes for communities at greatest risk.
The Role
Responsibilities
As an Advanced Public Health Practitioner, you will play a key role supporting the delivery of public health initiatives and interventions. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading on drug and alcohol work, ensuring alignment with local strategies, national policy, and wider public health priorities.
- Commissioning of drug and alcohol services, ensuring high-quality, safe, effective and value-for-money provision.
- Analysing and interpreting epidemiological, service and performance data to identify need, shape service development and inform decision-making.
- Leading or supporting multi-agency partnership groups relevant to substance use, including treatment and recovery systems, community safety, safeguarding, mental health, housing and homelessness, criminal justice, and children and young people’s pathways.
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including local authority services, NHS partners, providers, police, probation, voluntary and community organisations, and people with lived experience.
- Ensuring programmes are designed and delivered in ways that address health inequalities.
- Providing leadership, advice and subject matter expertise on drug and alcohol issues within the public health team and across partner organisations.

We are ideally looking to offer the successful candidate the full number of hours advertised above. We may however consider offering less hours than advertised providing they meet the requirements of the role and service which will be determined by the recruiting manager.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:
- Advanced knowledge and experience in public health practice, with a focus on health improvement and health protection.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and utilise data to inform decision making.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- Experience in project management, with the ability to lead and deliver multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
A relevant public health (or related) qualification and willingness to join the UK Public Health Register are essential for this role.
