Advisor, Radiological Protection
Salary: £40,000 - £55,150
Location: Hybrid - Derby, Manchester or Warrington
We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Advisor, Radiological Protection, to be involved in the safety and regulatory compliance for game-changing technology within the nuclear industry.
We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry. That's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.
Role Purpose
Reporting to the Senior Advisor for Radiological Protection, the Advisor, Radiological Protection will support the radiological protection aspects of the Rolls-Royce SMR design and contribute to the integrated Environment, Safety, Security & Safeguards (E3S) Case, ensuring compliance with UK regulations including the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17). The role is based across Rolls-Royce SMR's Derby, Manchester and Warrington sites, with ad hoc office attendance required alongside flexible working. Applicants can be based anywhere in the UK.
Radiological Protection is a cross-cutting discipline, involved in every aspect of the design, contributing requirements and analysing compliance against those requirements. The role supports demonstrations that the design is ALARP and ensures radiological protection is embedded into engineering decisions from the outset. Advisors are expected to contribute both internally and externally, including regulatory interactions, training delivery and collaborative design discussions.
This role offers the candidate the opportunity to shape radiological protection on the design development and Generic Design Assessment of a new nuclear plant design, the first of its kind in decades.
Key Results & Achievements
- Expert radiological protection input delivered to Engineering and E3S Case teams, enabling sound licensing and design decisions.
- Regulatory engagement with UK and international bodies supported to agreed programme, in line with SMR licensing requirements.
- ALARP demonstrations and radiological protection justifications led or supported to agreed quality standards.
- Operating experience and best practice from the wider nuclear industry accessed and integrated into design and safety case work.
- Radiological protection programmes developed and executed to agreed timescales.
- Radiological protection requirements embedded into engineering decisions across the design.
- Internal and external stakeholder engagement delivered, including regulatory interactions, training delivery and collaborative design discussions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
