AFM Applications Scientist – Semiconductor Metrology
£48,000 – £55,000 + EMI Share Options + Private Healthcare + Pension
Are you an AFM specialist who enjoys solving complex measurement challenges and pushing technology beyond its current limits?
We're looking for an AFM Applications Scientist to help develop and demonstrate the capabilities of our industry-leading Rapid Probe Microscope (RPM) technology. Working at the forefront of semiconductor metrology, you'll play a key role in developing new measurement techniques, improving system performance and supporting the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing.
This is a rare opportunity to combine scientific curiosity, applications development and advanced instrumentation within a highly collaborative team of scientists and engineers.

What you'll be doing
- Developing innovative AFM measurement techniques for advanced semiconductor applications
- Designing and executing experiments to demonstrate new product capabilities
- Improving data acquisition, measurement performance and system accuracy
- Analysing measurement data and identifying opportunities for system optimisation
- Collaborating with software, hardware and systems engineering teams to enhance product capabilities
- Supporting product development through hands-on experimentation and technical investigation
- Acting as a subject matter expert on AFM applications and nanoscale measurement techniques
- Helping translate customer challenges into practical technical solutions
- Contributing to the development of future product capabilities and application workflows
- Supporting customer demonstrations and technical evaluations when required

- Materials Characterisation
- Scientific Instrumentation
- Advanced Microscopy
- Semiconductor Process Control
Essential experience
- Hands-on Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) experience
- Developing, optimising or troubleshooting advanced measurement techniques
- Working with complex scientific or engineering instrumentation
- Experimental design, data interpretation and technical problem solving
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary technical teams
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Willingness to undertake occasional international travel
Nice to have
- Semiconductor manufacturing or semiconductor process development experience
- AFM applications within semiconductor environments
- Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM)
- Electron Microscopy or complementary characterisation techniques
- Data analysis and scientific programming skills
- Semiconductor inspection, defect analysis or process control experience
- Experience working in a scale-up or fast-growth technology company
Qualifications
- Degree, Master's or PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Engineering or a related scientific discipline
- or
- Equivalent commercial experience gained through AFM applications, scientific instrumentation or semiconductor metrology environments

Location and work pattern:
All of our new UK team members are asked to work on site here at Abingdon during their first three months with us. We offer flexible, hybrid working where possible upon completion of probation.
