The Role
BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, within its Defence Innovation and Technology division, is seeking an AI/ML Researcher to join the Knowledge and Semantics team under the Data and Decision Support Capability.
You will collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, working on advanced AI/ML solutions for defence, security, and commercial sectors, as well as internal BAE Systems AI programmes. This role also involves maintaining strong academic and industry partnerships while exploring and expanding your technical research interests.
A key part of your research portfolio will focus on NLP, LLM applications (including Agentic AI), knowledge graphs, and graph machine learning, advancing practical ML applications in these domains.
Key Responsibilities
- Propose and lead novel research in specialised topic areas.
- Lead technical delivery of small project teams.
- Prepare and present technical reports, proposals, and demonstrations.
- Develop prototypes and proof-of-concept demonstrators.
- Own and deliver project tasks to high standards.
- Present results effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements
Essential Experience & Qualifications
- PhD in a relevant field (e.g., AI, ML, NLP, Data Science, Knowledge Engineering).
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Experience with at least one ML framework (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- Experience with interactive:
- LLMs (including Agentic AI systems) or LLM applications.
- Knowledge graphs & graph machine learning.
- Graph-structured data (e.g., relational databases, graph algorithms).
Of particular interest are candidates demonstrating expertise in:
- Natural Language Processing (NLP):
- Information extraction, text mining, entity linking.
- Modern transformer-based models (desirable, not essential).
- LLM applications to defence challenges.
- The taxonomy of Graph ML tasks, including:
- Applied or foundational graph machine learning.
- Designing and utilising graph databases & algorithms.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Familiarity with:
- Knowledge representation & ontology design.
- Semantic or LLM-based reasoning.
- Experience with:
- Graph ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch-Geometric, PyKeen).
- Knowledge graph toolkits (e.g., Neo4j).
