About the Role
We seek an Airport Planner to join WSP’s Airport Planning & Advisory team in the UK. You’ll collaborate with aviation experts to deliver high-quality airport planning services, supporting projects across the UK and internationally.
Our team specialises in aviation infrastructure—from new airport development to optimising existing operations. Our work spans strategic airport master planning, sustainability and environmental consultancy, storefront and terminal development to airfield planning and regulatory analysis.
Your Key Contributions
A typical week in this role includes:
- Supporting high-impact aviation projects with a mix of technical, advisory, and project management tasks.
- Delivering airport master plans, technical due diligence, demand forecasting, spatial planning (terminals, runways, aprons), and capacity analysis.
- Undertaking air traffic forecasting and capacity-demand studies, with inputs to environmental impact assessments.
- Producing AutoCAD drawings (master plans, terminal layouts, airfield configurations).
- Conducting airfield/terminal simulations (CAST, AirTOP software).
- Assisting in bid preparation, investor lender advisory, and policy studies.
- Mentoring junior team members and providing technical expertise.
Responsibilities
- Technical Deliverables & Planning
- Develop airport master plans, capacity studies, and public engagement strategies.
- Conduct demand and capacity multi-score analyses for airport expansion/redevelopment.
- Lead spatial planning & layout design for terminals, support facilities, and airside extraction.
- Prepare submissions to AAA, weekly NPF submissions, and CAA—ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Apply environmental assessments and sustainability metrics (alignment with Net Zero & ICAO Decarbonisation goals).

Simulation & Modelling
- Execute terminal and airfield traffic simulations to identify bottlenecks and optimizations.
- Validate simulation outputs against CAA expectations & AirTOP/CAST outputs.

Project Management
- Coordinate sub-consultants (if required).
- Assess project proposals and present recommendations.
- Collaborate with first-line managers to champion project delivery.

Research, Reporting & Knowledge Sharing
- Toggle between detailed design and strategic consultancy delivery.
- Disseminate findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
- Train and mentor junior professionals.
Requirements
We’re looking for ** passionate planners** who care about transforming aviation infrastructure for the future. To qualify, you must demonstrate:
- ****2-5 years of relevant airport planning experience (consultancy or operator)**.
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in airport planning, air transport management, engineering, architecture, or transport planning.
- Proven expertise in: master (terminal), airfield, and support facility planning.
- Knowledge of CAA, EASA, ICAO standards, and strategic repositioning techniques.
- Strong AutoCAD skills for drawing airport master plans & layouts.
- Experience with airside/terminal traffic modelling (CAST/AirTOP preferred).
- Multitasking prowess—balancing deadline-driven, detail-oriented deliverables.
- Sustainability awareness: Alignment with net-zero, decarbonization targets, and innovative sustainability strategies.
- Ability to translate technical data into concise, clear presentations for clients and colleagues.
- Strong interpersonal and client-facing communication skills.
