Job Description

Seeking: AIX & Red Hat Linux Engineer to join our team onsite at our client site in Preston, 3 days and 2 days from home.

Department: IT Infrastructure

Employment Type: Full-Time / permanent

Security Clearance: UK Government Security Clearance required

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled AIX & Red Hat Linux Engineer to join our team and work on-site with one of our UK-based clients. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise UNIX/Linux systems in a secure environment.

The successful candidate will have strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders.

What You'll Be Doing

Install, configure, and maintain IBM AIX and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems. Manage LPARs, VIO servers, and HMCs in IBM Power Systems environments. Monitor and optimize system performance across AIX and RHEL platforms. Perform OS upgrades, patching, and backup/recovery operations. Automate administration tasks using shell scripting, Ansible, or similar tools. Collaborate with client stakeholders and internal teams to support business-critical applications. Ensure compliance with security and audit requirements. Provide on-site technical support and participate in on-call rotations. Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations and operational procedures.

What We Looking For

5+ years of experience in AIX systems administration. 3+ years of experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Strong knowledge of IBM Power Systems, LPARs, and VIO servers. Proficiency in shell scripting (Korn, Bash, etc.). Experience with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet). Familiarity with SAN storage, networking, and virtualization. Excellent customer-facing and communication skills. Knowledge of LDAP for authentication and directory services. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a client environment. Must hold or be eligible for UK Government Security Clearance.

Desirable Skills

Python scripting for automation and integration tasks. IBM Certified System Administrator – AIX. Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Engineer (RHCE). Experience with hybrid cloud environments or containerization (Docker, Podman). Familiarity with monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix).

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience). Demonstrated experience managing both AIX and RHEL environments in enterprise settings.
