Alternative Feeds Trader

Alternative Feeds Trader – 12-Month Maternity Cover (Temporary)

Commercially minded and customer-focused individuals with strong communication skills, numerical confidence, and market awareness are sought to join our team as an Alternative Feeds Trader.

This role offers a dynamic opportunity to contribute to a key part of our business, supporting British agriculture in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.


About The Role

  • Contract: Temporary (12-month maternity cover)
  • Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week, Monday to Friday)
  • Location: Hybrid (home-based + travel to Coylton Mill and Ashby-de-la-Zouch)
  • Type: Commercial trading with a focus on alternative feeds to meet budgeted volumes and margins

As a Hunterston Alternative Feeds Trader, you’ll:

  • Work closely with Senior Traders, field sales, and suppliers to manage trading positions and opportunities
  • Balance market insight, commercial strategy, and relationship-building
  • Play a critical role in driving the growth of our alternative feeds portfolio

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain strong customer and supplier communications while ensuring efficiency
  • Minimise risk through the management of trading positions and raw material books
  • Monitor commodity market trends, pricing fluctuations, and competitor activity
  • Secure value-for-money deals with suppliers and ensure accurate market positioning
  • Keep detailed records and utilise internal systems effectively
  • Support promotional events, supplier meetings, and newsletter contributions
  • Collaborate with the Feed Solutions team to identify new opportunities

About You

We’re looking for:

  • Familiarity with UK agriculture (helpful, though not essential)
  • Prior experience in trading, sales, or fast-paced commercial roles
  • A strong grasp of commodity markets and pricing strategies
  • Technical knowledge of livestock nutrition (ideal, but not mandatory)
  • Numerical confidence and proficient in pricing models
  • Microsoft Office proficiency and comfort with internal systems
  • Self-motivated, responsive, and commercially aware
  • Proactive and target-driven with a customer-focused mindset
  • A collaborative team player with a solution-oriented approach
