Main duties of the job
This role is funded by the NIHR UK Dementia Trials Network, supported as part of the Alzheimer's Society UKDTN Research Nurse programme, and hosted by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
Working within a newly formed team, the post holder will report directly to the Band 7 Alzheimer’s Society UKDTN Senior Research Nurse and will be supporting the set-up, coordination and delivery of a growing portfolio of early-phase mild cognitive impairment or dementia clinical research studies within the UHS R&D department and across its regional collaborating organisations.
The UKDTN was established in 2024 with just under £50 million of NIHR funding to build capacity, capability and expertise in early-phase dementia trial delivery across all four nations of the UK. Led by Professor Cath Mummery, the UKDTN will work with a range of stakeholders to establish around 20 sustainable early-phase dementia clinical trial sites across the UK over 5 years.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The UKDTN will work closely with industry partners, people affected by dementia and the wider dementia and neurodegeneration ecosystem to:
- Enable more people living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment to have an opportunity to take part in an early-phase dementia clinical trial irrespective of where they live.
- Embed appropriate participant and carer support throughout the trial journey, improving participant and carer experience and increasing retention.
- Widen access to larger, more diverse populations; broadening diversity among those recruited into dementia trials
- Bring together the UK clinical trials ecosystem and industry partners to help industry partners navigate the UK trials landscape, strengthen the UK trials infrastructure, and accelerate the development of new dementia treatments.
- Streamline trial feasibility, set-up and regulatory processes across the network
- Establish education and training pathways for dementia research leaders of the future

At Alzheimer’s Society, we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today and providing hope for the future. The Alzheimer’s Society have invested £3m to develop the first dedicated dementia research nurse programme working across all 4 nations of the UK. Integrated within the UK Dementia Trials Network, the Alzheimer’s Society Research Nurse Programme will fund, develop and support a network of dedicated dementia research nurses to expand capacity and capability in delivering innovative early-phase dementia clinical trials across the UK.
This role may involve travelling to different locations for network meetings and community engagement activities.
- Maintain and improve the local/regional database to ensure it is kept up-to-date and contains relevant data to enable robust dementia pre-screening processes. This will contribute to smooth recruitment to clinical trials and to bridging research and clinical care.
- Work in line with UKDTN and Alzheimer’s Society objectives to ensure delivery of strategic KPIs
- Maintain the UKDTN live capacity and capability database for UHS
- Complete and maintain dementia rating skills and support training others to increase dementia rater capacity and collaborations in the region.

Qualifications / Training Required
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse/ Statutory Registered Allied Health Professional on relevant part of the NMC/HCPC register
- Educated to or working towards Degree level.
- Evidence of on-going professional / academic development.
- Mentorship qualification (or evidence of meeting the outcomes of the NMC/HCPC standards)
- Clinical Skills certification relevant to role and specialty
Desirable criteria
- Specialist qualification.
- Degree in healthcare or biomedical science subject
- Certification Leadership or management course
Previous or relevant experience necessary
Essential criteria
- Extensive post registration experience, including considerable senior band 5 experience in clinical research or a relevant clinical speciality
- Knowledge and experience within a relevant / acute healthcare / NHS setting
- Understanding of personal accountability
- Logical and consistent work and career pattern
- Recent management or leadership experience
- Interest in Clinical Research
- Knowledge of the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care
- Knowledge of International Conference on Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice (ICH/GCP).
- Provide evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice
Desirable criteria
- Clinical Research experience
- Experience as an NMC / HCPC sign-off mentor or clinical practice assessor
- Experience of leading the delivery of a clinical research project
- Experience of being a link nurse (e.g. infection prevention, Manual handling, fire warden, etc)
- Demonstrate ability to liaise / collaborate with MD
