Ambulance Care Assistant – Full-Time (Thurmaston, Leicestershire)

An Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA) is a hugely rewarding and fulfilling role. Each day, you’ll help those in need, making their lives easier and knowing your work makes a meaningful difference.

About the Role

Your primary responsibility is transporting elderly, sick, and vulnerable service users to/from medical appointments and healthcare facilities. You may work as part of a two-person team or independently.

Key Tasks:

  • Transport patients alone or with a colleague within operational hours (5am–midnight, including weekends).
  • Assist in lifting, securing, and moving patients in/out of ambulances.
  • Transfer patients between beds, stretchers, and hospital chairs (including flights).
  • Handle end-of-life transportation with empathy and care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and medical staff during transfers.
  • Ensure ambulances remain safe, clean, and tidy.
  • Support patients with challenging behaviour or mental health needs.
  • Assist with handover of patients to healthcare providers or families.

Requirements: Must work on an 8-hour rota (5 shifts per week), hold a full UK driving licence, and be physically fit for patient handling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Care: Demonstrate empathy, patience, and a calm demeanour in all situations.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to NHS and company transport protocols.

  • Mobility: Be comfortable driving across Leicestershire and surrounding areas.
  • Physical Fitness: Lifting, bending, and assisting vulnerable patients throughout shifts.

Person Specification

Must-Haves

✅ License & Driving: Full UK driving licence with no more than six penalty points. ✅ Fitness: Physically fit to handle patients and move stretchers. ✅ Teamwork: Strong collaboration skills in high-pressure environments. ✅ Resilience: Ability to adapt to emotional scenarios (e.g., illness, end-of-life support). ✅ Communication: Clear verbal/written skills for interacting with patients, families, and staff. ✅ Regulatory Background Checks: Willingness to undergo Enhanced DBS (company-funded) and investigations.
