About the Role
Opportunities have arisen within South Western Ambulance Service in our Emergency Operations Centre for Dispatchers. The successful candidates will be integral members of the 999 control room team, responsible for the effective deployment and management of Trust vehicles across emergency and non-emergency calls, serving the entire Trust area.
This is a core emergency role, operating 24/7, 365 days a year with shift-based working to ensure full coverage (including weekends, nights, and bank holidays). Unsociable hours are paid under Section 2 of NHS Terms and Conditions.
This role sits within a holding pool, to ensure we have ongoing capacity for future training. Shortlisted candidates are expected to attend an assessment centre.
Responsibilities
- Provide 999 emergency dispatch and traffic management within a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
- Deploy and coordinate response vehicles to calls efficiently, ensuring rapid and effective assistance.
- Handle non-emergency duties while minimising disruption to core emergency operations.
- Collaborate with team members underigna autonomous and team-based Environment.
- Maintain system accuracy for ambulance and vehicle availability in real-time.
- Work to established shift patterns to ensure continuous 24-hour service delivery.

Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent), including English.
- Strong keyboard and call management skills required.
- Excellent oral communication, under pressure and in emotionally challenging scenarios.
Personal Attributes
- The ability to work tactfully, diplomatically, and deal sensitively with both callers and colleagues.
- Regarded as emotionally resilient and able to cope with the stress and urgency of emergency services operations.
- Experience (or aptitude) working in a shift rotation (including weekends, nights, and bank holidays) is essential.
- Highly organised, detail-oriented, and capable of delivering under immense pressure.

Salary & Working Conditions
- Starting salary: £27,485 per annum.
- Enhanced unsociable hours payments in accordance with NHS Terms and Conditions.
- Flexible working arrangements considered for part-time candidates—apply via the traditional recruitment process for details.
