Under Water Systems (UWS)
Our purpose is to be the leading provider of underwater sensors and decision superiority, helping navies across the world keep our friends, families and all of us safe. We cover four sectors: Mine Counter Measures, Anti-Submarine warfare, Services and Future Capabilities.
Primary Purpose of the Role:
To carry out general engineering tasks as required by the business. Responsible for the design and development of RF and electronic items within the CAP group, including but not limited to antennas, tuners and RF distribution units. Work in collaboration with the architects, solution engineers and business development teams to develop innovative, cost effective and compliant solutions to the customer needs. Actively make steps to learn from other members of the Thales family. Share their knowledge and experience with other members of the team.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
To create and agree a development plan with the team leader and then take responsibility for following the plan and requesting assistance as needed. To carry out design activities in a team environment with other engineers. Work collaboratively with production and procurement to produce cost effective, easy to manufacture design solutions. Provide support to the preparation of detailed estimates and bids. To develop the Analogue Design, Simulation and Testing core capability within MMS. To support the team leader in the development of the less experienced engineers in the areas of Engineering Design, use of Engineering Tools and Thales Design Processes. With the Team Leader develop the teams knowledge in Design for Manufacture and Product Line Engineering. Support the Hardware Bid and Product Manager to implement Process Improvement and Product initiatives within the team.

Skills
Essential
Highly skilled in Electronics and Hardware Engineering. Good understanding of Engineering Design lifecycles and the interaction with system engineering Knowledge of the application of engineering techniques to the design & manufacture of electro-mechanical products. Good interpersonal skills with different Proactive “can-do” mentality Ability to work in a team environment Must have Microsoft Office suite experience The individual will be expected to demonstrate a high level of autonomy. Logical approach to problem solving
Desirable
Digital and Analogue Electronic Design. RF Design PCB layout design
Experience:
Essential
Previous experience of the systems engineering lifecycle, including detailed requirements analysis and decomposition, together with the ability to deal with technical aspects in all the allied disciplines Lead design engineer for electromechanical products Background in Radio Communication and / or acoustic communications in a submarine environment Defence industry background. Analogue / Comms / RF / electrical experience
Desirable
Understanding of Naval platforms. The key areas of design undertaken for which previous experience would be beneficial will include: - Design of communications equipment in the RF field The design of sonar assemblies and equipment for the sub-sea environment. The design of deployment systems Design and development of Hardware Engineering Products. Design / specification of packaging solutions.

Due to the nature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles are subject to security restrictions. This role requires you to be a UK National and achieve Security Clearance (SC) without any caveats. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. If approved by the MOD, a dual national from a non-ITAR country may be considered.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
