Job Title: Analyst – Abbott Rapid Diagnostics
About the Role
Abbott Rapid Diagnostics is a division of Abbott’s Diagnostics family, combining skilled professionals and cutting-edge technology to deliver critical diagnostic support. This role, based in the Abbott Rapid Diagnostics laboratory at Abingdon, UK, focuses on drug of abuse analysis in biological samples using a mix of immunoassay techniques (CEDIA, HEIA, ELISA) and confirmatory methods (LC/MS/MS). As an Analyst, you will ensure analyses are conducted to the highest quality and safety standards, while meeting strict deadlines.
This position operates under Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and is subject to periodic review by management.
Responsibilities
Daily Operations & Routine Work
- Conduct routine extractions of biological samples
- Prepare lab reagents, ensuring aseptic conditions
- Run and document Screening Summary Traceables (SSTs)
- Perform basic checks and maintenance of electronic and mechanical equipment
- Maintain freedom from contaminants in the laboratory (e.g., expiry date monitoring)
- Update and validate instruments, including:
- Heaters
- Fridges & freezers
- Pipettes
- Achieve and maintain cross-training competencies in both screening and confirmation techniques
- Frequently support knowledge transfer for Trainee Analysts through buddying
Non-Daily & Site-Specific Tasks
- Complete mandated training modules and assessments
- Conduct routine stock checks and replenish supplies
- Assist in the development and implementation of new processes within the lab
- Ensure compliance with storage procedures and best practices

Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements (BASIC QUALIFICATIONS)
- Science graduate (or equivalent experience in a relevant field)
- Understanding of drug screening panels and clinical applications
- Knowledge of extraction methods (e.g., immunoassays, mass spectrometry)
- Awareness of health and safety protocols applicable to laboratory work
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a laboratory environment, particularly in diagnostics or toxicology
- Hands-on familiarity with the roles outlined in "Responsibilities" (e.g., instrumentation, SOPs)

- Analytical acumen with excellent attention to detail
- Scientific curiosity and eagerness to learn technical processes
- Initiative and resilience to troubleshoot and succeed amid challenges

This role is based within ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025 certified laboratories. Compliance with documented SOPs is mandatory.

Location & Conditions
- Position Title: Analyst – Toxicology & Drug Screening
- Location: Abbott Rapid Diagnostics, Abingdon, UK (21 Blacklands Way)
- Shift: Standard working hours (no overnight or shift work)
- Travel: Resident or regular commuter with vehicle or public transport access
- Employment Status: Standard contract (no medical surveillance required)
