Data Scientist / Bioinformatician Fixed-Term Role (2 Years) – Full-Time (35 Hours/Week)
Accountable to: Dr Ros Cutts, Senior Bioinformatician (Liquid Biopsy), ICR/Primary Care University Partnership Centre
About the Role
The Molecular Oncology Laboratory at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is seeking an Experienced Data Scientist/Bioinformatician with state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) expertise to advance precision medicine in breast cancer treatment.
In this scientific research role, you will:
- Contribute to cutting-edge biomarker research and clinical data analysis within a team focused on overcoming treatment resistance in breast cancer.
- Develop novel statistical and machine learning approaches to analyse high-dimensional biological datasets, including metadata derived from circulating free DNA (cfDNA) and alternative assays.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team—spanning oncologists, computational scientists, and liquid biopsy researchers—to translate data into personalised breast cancer therapy strategies.
- Work closely with Dr Ros Cutts to integrate computational methods into clinical research frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Data Science & Bioinformatics
- Design, implement, and validate statistical models and machine learning algorithms tailored to omics data and clinical datasets.
- Process, clean, mining, and integrate multi-layered bioinformatics datasets (e.g., RNA-sequencing, cfDNA, proteomics).
- Drive novel analysis pipelines for incorporating liquid biopsy data (e.g., cfDNA-derived traits) into precision medicine workflows.
Collaboration & Project Delivery
- Work across research teams (academic and clinical) to define research questions and translate findings into actionable biomarker-driven strategies.
- Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and disseminate outcomes at national/international conferences.
- Support the lab’s external biomarker validation programmes, including clinical trial activities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
