About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Android Developer to join our Apps team at Guardian News and Media. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in developing and maintaining our award-winning Android applications, primarily built using Kotlin and Java within Android Studio. Your contributions will directly impact the user experience, ensuring our app remains fast, stable, and reliable, which is evidenced by our 4.7-star rating on the Play Store. As a senior member of the team, you will lead key projects, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, and mentor junior developers. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on major new features, optimize existing functionalities, and influence product decisions that shape the future of our digital offerings.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will demonstrate extensive experience in Android development with a strong passion for continuous learning and growth. Proficiency in Kotlin is essential, with familiarity in Java being advantageous. You should possess deep knowledge of modern Android tools and libraries, including Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, Flow, MVVM architecture, Webviews, and modular app architectures. Experience with JVM unit testing, instrumented testing, and UI regression testing is required, alongside the ability to work comfortably with both legacy and cutting-edge technologies. A background in leadership or team collaboration is desirable, along with a basic understanding of iOS development and related languages such as Swift and Objective-C. Familiarity with server-side languages like Scala and Typescript is a plus, reflecting the collaborative nature of our development environment.

Responsibilities
As a Senior Android Developer, your responsibilities will include:
- Building and testing major new features
- Enhancing existing functionalities
- Ensuring the overall stability and performance of our Android applications
You will work predominantly in Kotlin, with occasional work in Java, contributing to a collaborative culture through pair programming and close stakeholder engagement. Your role involves close coordination with iOS, server-side, and web engineers, as well as designers, product managers, editorial, and commercial teams to deliver seamless digital experiences. You will take a leadership role in project planning, code reviews, and mentorship, fostering growth within the team. Your input will be valued in product and technical decision-making processes, and you will be encouraged to innovate regularly through hack days and ongoing experimentation. Additionally, you will support the professional development of your peers by sharing your expertise and encouraging best practices in testing, code quality, and architecture.
