Animal Care Technician / Trainer Assessor – Fixed-Term Role

Application Deadline: 8 July 2026 Department: Central Animal Care Location: Sandwell College Compensation: £28,278 – £32,783 per year


About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Animal Care Technician / Trainer Assessor to join our Animal Care team on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

This role combines:

  • The day-to-day management of the animal facility
  • Training, supervision, and assessment of students in practical animal care

Key Responsibilities

  • Animal Welfare & Care:

    • Provide high standards of daily animal care (feeding, cleaning, enrichment, health monitoring)
    • Ensure all animals' welfare is maintained in line with legislation and best practice
    • Maintain excellent hygiene and cleanliness in the animal facility
  • Student Support & Mentoring:

    • Train, supervise, and support students in practical animal care duties
    • Complete relevant assessment paperwork
  • Technical & Practical Duties:

    • Demonstrate and promote correct animal handling, husbandry, and safe working practices
    • Assist in the organisation and preparation of teaching sessions
    • Work closely with teaching staff to enhance practical learning

  • Supply & Record Management:

    • Order and manage animal care supplies (feed, bedding, consumables)
    • Maintain accurate records (stock, feeding schedules, health checks, facility operations)
  • Cover & Emergency Responsibilities:

    • Provide cover during holidays, bank holidays, and College closures to ensure animal care continuity

Skills & Experience Required

  • A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in animal care-related studies
  • Hands-on experience in caring for:
    • Exotic species
    • Small mammals
    • Livestock
  • Strong knowledge of animal welfare legislation and health & safety
  • Experience training, supervising, or mentoring students, volunteers, or staff
  • Technical expertise in correct animal handling and safe working practices
  • Excellent organisation and record-keeping skills
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including cover shifts
  • Desirable: TAQA Assessor qualification (or willingness to pursue)
