Animal Caretaker I or II

Location: Temple University’s Laboratory Animal Resources Department (ULAR) Position Types and Rates:

  • Animal Caretaker I (V12): $24.02/hour
  • Animal Caretaker II (V13): $25.54/hour
  • Includes PTEA Union Rate benefits

About the Department

The Animal Caretaker I or II role is based in Temple University’s Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR). ULAR provides animal care, husbandry, customer service, and study support for research, testing, and education.

Our mission is to ensure the humane treatment of animals, compliance with institutional policies and federal laws, and high-quality care for all research subjects.


About the Role

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will oversee compassionate animal care, husbandry management, and study support, while assuming leadership in:

  • Animal procurement and front-end billing
  • Staff training and project management
  • Nutrition, sanitation, and health monitoring
  • Compliance with federal laws and institutional policies

Core duties include:

  • Daily animal health checks and reporting to veterinary staff
  • Feeding, watering, and cleaning cages per ULAR SOPs
  • Age/sex verification, weaning schedules, and disposal of deceased animals
  • Handling, transferring, and identifying animals per IACUC policies
  • Maintaining log records (animal census, enrichment, equipment logs)
  • Cage washing, sanitisation, and equipment maintenance
  • Processing animal caging and operating mechanical systems

Required Education and Experience

Animal Caretaker I

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Six months of directly animal-related experience

Animal Caretaker II

or equivalent combination of education/experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • 4.5 years of directly related experience with rodents and USDA-covered species OR
  • 3 years of directly related experience with rodents and USDA-covered species + AALAS ALAT Certification

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Expertise in handling rodents, USDA-covered species, and other research animals used at Temple University
  • Fundamental knowledge of animal husbandry, sanitation, and compliance regulations
  • Ability to adhere to SOPs, safety, and IACUC guidelines
  • Strong attention to detail for record-keeping
  • Basic mechanical and cleaning skills for facilities and equipment
  • Willingness to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
