Anticipated Special Education Instructional Assistant Position

School Year & Hours

Available for the 2026-2027 school year at Lehigh Elementary. Hours: 8:45 AM – 3:00 PM daily.

Job Summary

Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individuals or small groups of identified students in a classroom or alternative learning environment, ensuring they engage effectively with specialised educational programmes.


Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Possess a High School Diploma or its accepted equivalency
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Employment Eligibility Verification
    • Criminal History Record Checks
    • Pre-Employment Drug Testing
    • Physical Examination & TB Testing
  • Meet "Highly Qualified" status under the No Child Left Behind legislation, with one of the following:
    • An Associate’s Degree (or)
    • Forty-eight post-secondary credits (or)
    • Successful completion of a District-approved proficiency assessment
  • Have experience working with children, including those with special needs, in a structured setting
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the English language with strong oral and written communication skills
  • Display professional courtesy and tact when interacting with staff, parents, and the public
  • Proficiency in basic computer operations, software, and assigned office equipment
  • Ability to maintain high standards of confidentiality
  • Capacity to build cooperative working relationships with colleagues

Primary Responsibilities

The role requires the following essential functions, with flexibility provided under reasonable accommodation as needed:

  • Assistance with Special Needs Students

    • Support, relate to, and assist children with diverse learning needs
    • Ensure compliance with special education programmes
  • Academic & Administrative Support

    • Assist students with standardised and District assessments
    • Maintain student files and programme records for accountability
    • Reinforce individualised lessons as directed by the teacher
    • Monitor practice drills and subject assignments in multiple areas
  • Instructional Implementation

    • Apply student behaviour plans and modified lessons as required
    • Clarify classroom rules and expectations for comprehension
    • Guide students through assignments and projects, providing examples and encouragement
  • Logistical & Administrative Tasks

    • Prepare, duplicate, and organise classroom materials and documents
    • Set up learning spaces and displays, distribute supplies
    • Collaborate with staff to olve issues or facilitate collaboration
    • Maintain compliance with Chapter 14 special education regulations
    • Adhere to attendance policies

  • Reading and assisting with reading and writing exercises
  • Ordering supplies as assigned
  • Supporting students in personal care needs as necessary/safely
  • Meeting District health and safety protocols
  • Compelling to attend seminars or training when scheduled

Terms of Employment

  • 6 to 7 hours and 30 minutes per day
  • 182 student days per academic year
  • Hourly pay rate and benefits governed by the Northampton Area School District’s ESPA Collective Bargaining Agreement
