Application Support Engineer
Join us at Barclays, where you’ll be a pivotal part of our Application Support Engineering team. You’ll play a critical role in maintaining the stability, availability, and high performance of essential business applications.
About the Role
Your responsibilities will cover:
- Providing 24/7 on-call monitoring of business-critical applications
- Diagnosing and resolving production issues through structured ITIL processes
- Collaborating with engineering teams to optimise application reliability, performance, and operational resilience
- Leading preventative troubleshooting and automation of monitoring using observability tools
The role is based in Knutsford.
Purpose
Ensure supreme uptime of Barclays’ critical technology infrastructure by proactively resolving complex technical disruptions and minimising business impact.
Responsibilities
- Deliver end-to-end technical support, including diagnosing and resolving sophisticated service issues across a designated client base
- Enhance the support model and service offerings through structured process improvements
- Execute preventative maintenance activities on infrastructure and software while analysing monitoring metrics for early risk identification
- Document resolved cases in a curated knowledge base to enable self-service and seamless knowledge transfer
- Perform root cause analysis of logs, errors, and user reports, implementing hardware fixes, software reinstalls, or configuration changes where required
- Advance internal capability through automation, capacity management, resiliency projects, and stakeholder alignment for front-office support
- Escalate risk-critical issues and actively refine monitoring thresholds and alerting strategies

Key Accountabilities
Core Support & Service Delivery Expectations
- Operate within SLAs, delivering accurate, efficient technical support
- Escalate non-standard issues in a structured manner to the appropriate competency level
- Maintain detailed service documentation for milestones like migrations, updates, or concurrent operations
- Act as a SME (Subject Matter Expert) in assigned technical areas and influencing solutions through data-driven analysis
- Conduct internal threshold reviews (where possible) when supporting optimisation team initiatives
Support SME Responsibilities (for relevant bands)
- Manage awareness of existing and future changes across markets, supported applications, APIs, or cloud services delivered under scope
- Upskill when out of scope of current skillset, and advise on challenges and risks
- Monitor and analyze support data, partner with additional specialised teams for participating solutions to cross-learn and identify trends or risks
- Support outsourced teams, special projects, or upgrade processes as required
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong AWS proficiency as an application/ops support specialist, including troubleshooting AWS-hosted applications and leveraging cloud-native tools
- Expertise in MS SQL Server:
- Query refinement and performance tuning
- Database error debugging
- Supporting enterprise-scale app integrations
- Unix/Linux administration & production troubleshooting:
- Secure configuration management
- Automated workflows and scripting
- Log analysis/aggregation for incident resolution
- Minimum 3 years' experience in an AWS support or DevOps engineering role, within cloud-agnostic, development, and operational environments

Advantageous Experience (Preferred)
- APIs & Integration: Experience in any cloud/SaaS service integration, connectivity methods (e.g., Kafka), or Enterprise Service Bus technologies
- CI/CD: Hands-on experience with GitLab pipelines or assured compliance with:
- Bitbucket/Gerrit
- Jenkins tools
- Security patching and compliance-stated release processes
- Observability & Monitoring Tools:
- AppDynamics or product-specific offerings
- Kibana (ELK stack) and New Relic companies
- Splunk, Nagios, Zabbix, Datadog, or similar
- Demonstratable track record of scaling monitoring solutions to support fast-growing, technologically complex applications
Assessments & Cultural Fit
Barclays will evaluate a combination of:
- Technical or business acumen aligned with role-specific areas (e.g., AWS, MS SQL)
- ITIL and process-adherence capability (IT Governance/TOGAF/OCB)
- Incident/resolution example(s) within technical or delivery-oriented environments
- Adaptability to Barclays' Mindset: ESD principles (Empower, Challenge, Drive) and VIRES (Values: Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence, Stewardship)
