About the Team
The Innovation & AI team within the Solutions function drives innovation in legal and business service delivery. We develop, pilot, and scale AI and legal technology solutions to enhance client service and internal efficiency. Our work involves close collaboration with IT, Office of the General Counsel (OGC), Procurement, Solutions/Helix, and Practice Groups to integrate new tools and workflows across the firm.
The Applied AI Engineer plays a critical role in designing, building, and productionising AI-enabled solutions to tackle complex challenges in legal and business processes.
The Role
This hands-on position requires a technical consultant who can translate business needs into AI solutions. You will:
- Design, build, and maintain AI applications, automations, and internal tools using Python, cloud services, and enterprise platforms.
- Work with stakeholders to identify use cases, refine requirements, and create scalable technical designs.
- Develop integrations across internal/enterprise systems, external applications, and AI services.
- Build reusable AI skills, agents, and workflow components for firm-wide adoption.
- Engineers document-focused AI solutions (extraction, summarisation, search, retrieval, and due diligence).
- Productise AI pilots by enhancing reliability, testing, documentation, and maintainability.
- Collaborate with product, UX, engineering, and cloud teams to deliver secure, scalable AI solutions.
- Apply ethical principles for confidential data handling, privacy, security, governance, and responsible AI.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate business problems into AI workflows for Python, cloud, and enterprise platforms.
- Create multi-step AI automations, including tool-using agents and platform-native solutions.
- Build integrations with external APIs, SDKs, and enterprise systems.
- Foster reusable AI patterns to support wider firm adoption.
- Ensure scalability, maintainability, and security across production AI systems.
- Work collaboratively with engineering, cloud, and business teams to deliver solutions.
- Prioritise client data protection, AI ethics, and governance standards.

Requirements
Essential
- Strong Python software engineering experience (applications, integrations, automations, or internal tools).
- Experience with AI/ML or LLM-based solutions in near-production or production environments.
- Practical knowledge of APIs, SDKs, cloud services, and enterprise platforms.
- Understanding of prompt engineering, RAG, LLM workflows, or agentic design patterns.
- Ability to stakeholder interview, translate business processes into technical designs.
- Proficiency in testing, debugging, Git, and maintaining robust systems.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills (for technical and non-technical audiences).
Preferable
- Experience in legal, professional services, or document-intensive industry environments.
- Familiarity with document processing pipelines, unstructured data workflows, or knowledge retrieval systems.
- Working knowledge of orchestration frameworks, agents, automation tools, or AI platforms.
- Exposure to enterprise AI governance, security, privacy, and responsible AI considerations.
