Historic Environment Scotland – Board Chair
Historic Environment Scotland plays a lead role in securing the delivery of the Strategy for Scotland’s Historic Environment – “Our Past Our Future”. We are responsible for protecting and promoting some of the nation’s most fabulous heritage assets, like Edinburgh Castle. We also look after some of Scotland’s outstanding collections and archives, but our work extends far beyond that. At Historic Environment Scotland, we operate as:
- A regulator
- A grant provider
- A research organisation
- An expert heritage adviser across diverse subjects
About the Role
We are seeking a Chair with proven experience and authority to guide the Board through a period of significant change. The successful candidate will bring:
- Driven internal culture change
- Experience of facing turnaround challenges
- An instinct for opportunities in the heritage sector
- The warmth and energy to engage both the Board and Scotland’s wider heritage and culture community

Skills & Experience Required
The successful candidate must demonstrate:
Priority Criterion:
- Strategic vision and leadership
Essential Criteria:
- Experience in promoting and embedding a positive and inclusive culture
- Proven track record of leading change in organisations with dispersed and diverse workforces
- Strong relationship management, collaboration, and influence
- Demonstrated understanding of a Board’s governance role
Supporting Documents & Word Limits
- Prepare your supporting statement as a single PDF, no more than 1,000 words, and upload under the "Resume" section.
- Your tailored career history (up to 400 words) must be answered as a direct response within the application.
Remuneration & Time Commitment
- Remuneration: £408 per day
- Expenses reimbursed: Reasonable travel, subsistence, childcare, and carer receipted expenses
- Non-pensionable role
- Typical commitment: Approximately four days per month
- First 6–12 months: Six to eight days per month, on average
- Closing date: 17:00 on Thursday, 23 July 2026
