Board Member – Historic Environment Scotland
Role Summary
We are looking for Board members with specific skills to contribute to the development of the Board and help adapt to challenges and opportunities within the heritage buildings sector.
The Board is responsible for determining:
- The overall vision
- Strategic aims and objectives of Historic Environment Scotland
- Alignment with statutory duties within policy and resource frameworks agreed with Scottish Ministers
The Board assigns oversight, with ultimate responsibility for:
- Stewardship
- Performance of the organisation
Responsibilities
Public Appointees must:
- Ensure the public body delivers functions in accordance with Scottish Ministers’ policies and priorities
- Provide strategic leadership
- Exercise financial stewardship
- Hold the Chief Executive and senior management team accountable

Role Criteria
Priority Experience Required
You must demonstrate *experience in at least one of the following:
- Finance, audit and oversight
- ICT/Digital programmes and operational leadership
- People leadership and organisational change/re-design
- Board governance
- Heritage buildings sector
Essential Criteria
You must demonstrate all of these:
- The ability to challenge views constructively and supportively
- Capacity to see the ‘bigger picture’
- Effective communication skills
- Personal commitment and enthusiasm for Scotland’s historic environment
About Us
Public appointments are made by Scottish Ministers, with oversight from the Ethical Standards Commissioner (link).
Remuneration & Time Commitment
- Daily rate: £308
- Expenses reimbursed: Reasonable travel, subsistence, childcare and carer expenses
- Pension eligibility: Non-pensionable role
- Average monthly commitment: 2 days/month
