Job Summary

Taylor Wimpey participates in the NHBC Pride in the Job scheme, where our sites undergo independent assessment by the National House-Building Council across 28 key performance standards. We prioritise safety, environmental responsibility and high professional standards for both our employees and subcontractors.

We’re seeking skilled, motivated bricklayers—individuals who take pride in their work and exceed customer expectations from the first brick to the final finish.

As an Apprentice Bricklayer you will:

  • Work through new build projects from inception to completion
  • Interpret drawings and specifications to guide your work
  • Lay the foundation (literally and figuratively) by setting out the first course of bricks, ensuring perfect alignment and levelling
  • Mix, apply, and refine mortar, including techniques like raking and shaping bricks for seams or detailing
  • Demonstrate safe work practices—especially at height and on-site
  • Uphold company procedures and NHBC standards on every project
  • Balance on-site delivery with academic progression, attending College on a day-release basis

Primary Responsibilities

  • Site Preparation:

    • Measure and mark work areas accurately
    • Establish the first row of bricks and damp course alignment, ensuring consistency and structural integrity
  • Bricklaying Techniques:

    • Mix mortar to specifications, ensuring consistent workability and adhesion
    • Lay blocks precisely, using tools like trowels for clean application
    • Shape, trim, and adjust bricks to meet finish expectations (inteneurated columns, curved walls, or special features)
    • Maintain vertical and horizontal levels throughout adjoining courses
  • Academic and Commute Requirements:

    • Commit to dominant day-release to college for coursework and certification
    • Travel regularly between remote sites and education facilities (consider transportation constraints—some locations have limited public transport access)

Experience, Qualifications, and Technical Requirements

  • Essential:

    • GCSEs in Maths and English (or equivalents)
    • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
    • Safety-conscious mindset, with awareness of working at height and site hazards
  • Personal Attributes:

    • Effective collaborator, harmonising with multi-disciplinary teams (foundations, roofers, plasterers, etc.)
    • Knowledge of property development phases and the role of tradespersons in quality completion
    • CSCS card (or willingness to obtain on temporary assignments if required)
